- 14 December 1924: Born Shrishti Nath Kapoor in Peshawar, to actor Prithviraj Kapoor. He later took the name Ranbir Raj Kapoor.
- 1935: Debuts as a child actor in Inquilab.
- 1947: Gets his adult break with Neel Kamal.
- 1948: Founds RK Films at age 24. Directs and stars in its first film, Aag, the same year.
- 1951: Awaara becomes a sensation, especially across the Soviet Union.
- 1955: Shree 420 cements his “common man” screen persona.
- 1964: Sangam is released, RK Films’ first colour film.
- 1970: Mera Naam Joker, his most personal project, flops at first but is later reappraised as ahead of its time.
- 1973: Bobby revives his career and launches son Rishi Kapoor.
- 2 May 1988: Collapses from a severe asthma attack while receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award on stage.
- 2 June 1988: Dies at AIIMS, New Delhi, aged 63.

- Shree 420 (1955) tackled poverty, unemployment, and national pride. It gave Hindi cinema two enduring songs, “Mera Joota Hai Japani” and “Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua.”
- Mera Naam Joker (1970) was his most personal film, about a circus clown’s private sorrows. It underperformed at release but is now considered ahead of its time.
- Bobby (1973) revived his career after Joker‘s failure. It also launched his son Rishi Kapoor as a leading man, in a teenage love story.
