Bioeconomy Roadmap 2035

India’s bioeconomy was worth $10 billion in 2014. It is now worth roughly $195 billion. NITI Aayog just published a plan to push it past $2.6 trillion by 2047.

The 2035 and 2047 Targets

On 16 July 2026, NITI Aayog launched the “Roadmap for Building India as a Leading Bioeconomy Powerhouse by 2035.” Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, launched it.

• The Roadmap targets a bioeconomy worth $691 billion by 2035.
• It targets $2.6 trillion by 2047, matching India’s “Viksit Bharat @2047” horizon.
• It aims to create over 30 million high-value jobs.
• It proposes a ₹50,000 crore BioEconomy Growth Fund.

Six National BioMissions

The Roadmap proposes 6 National BioMissions.

• GeneIndia, AgriBio 2.0, BioX Foundry, One Health Grid, Marine Biotechnology, and BioPharmaNext.
• Together they cover several fields. These include gene and cell therapies, climate-resilient farming, and synthetic biology. Others include disease tracking, ocean biotech, and new-generation biopharma drugs.
• Beyond the Growth Fund, the Roadmap makes more recommendations. It wants faster approvals for new products. It also wants more AI use in research, and closer ties between industry and academia.

A Decade of Real Growth

India’s bioeconomy grew from about $10 billion in 2014 to over $195 billion today.

• That is a jump of nearly 20 times in about a decade.
• The Roadmap’s $691 billion 2035 target assumes that pace can accelerate further, not just hold steady.
• The Roadmap positions India among the world’s leading biotechnology powers, alongside the US and China.

Who Built the Roadmap

The Roadmap was developed by the NITI Frontier Tech Hub. It worked with several partners. These were the Department of Biotechnology, industry body ABLE, and academia.

• The Roadmap was launched in the presence of Prof. Gobardhan Das, Member, NITI Aayog. His name is a coincidental match to the unrelated GOBARdhan scheme. That is a completely different, narrower programme.

A Familiar Naming Pattern

This national Roadmap is much broader than the GOBARdhan scheme, which focuses narrowly on circular bioenergy from cattle dung and organic waste. GOBARdhan is one small piece of the much larger bioeconomy this Roadmap targets.

• Naming 6 separate missions, rather than one single programme, follows a pattern India has used before.
• It broke earlier big bets, like the National Quantum Mission and its semiconductor push, into named, trackable sub-programmes too.

The 2035 vs 2047 Number Trap

A few details here trip up exam-takers. Watch for these three traps.

• Common Trap: A question might swap the Roadmap’s two separate target figures. $691 billion is the 2035 milestone. $2.6 trillion is the longer-range 2047 target. Don’t quote the larger figure as the nearer-term goal.
• Scheme-Confusion Trap: GOBARdhan and the Bioeconomy Roadmap are easily confused. Both are government-led biotech plans with similar names. GOBARdhan is a narrow circular-bioenergy scheme. The Roadmap is a much broader, economy-wide strategy. It spans six separate missions.
