Ocean Primary Producers: Cyanobacteria, Diatoms, and What Isn’t One

Every fish in the ocean owes its existence to organisms too small to see. Two of them make their own food from sunlight; two others just eat.

Who Actually Produces Food in the Ocean

Cyanobacteria Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic bacteria. They’re genuine primary producers, forming a key part of ocean phytoplankton.
Diatoms Diatoms are photosynthetic algae, encased in a unique silicate cell wall. They’re responsible for a large share of Earth’s total primary production.
Copepods Are Consumers Copepods are small crustaceans that feed on phytoplankton like diatoms and cyanobacteria. They don’t photosynthesize themselves.
Foraminifera Are Consumers Too Most foraminifera are heterotrophic. They consume algae, bacteria, or other small protozoa, rather than producing their own food.

Phytoplankton, the Base Cyanobacteria and diatoms together form the base of the ocean food chain, living in the sunlit surface layer.

Foraminifera’s Role Foraminifera, tiny shelled protists, mostly graze on bacteria and algae, playing their own role further along the food web.
