Faced with a predator, some animals run. Others simply turn themselves into a ball of armor, tucking away everything soft.

🏛️ Must Know
Which Animals Actually Roll Into a Ball
- Hedgehog A hedgehog’s main defense is curling into a tight ball. This tucks its soft belly and face inside, leaving only its spiny back exposed.
- Pangolin A pangolin curls into a ball too, covering its soft underside with its own armored, overlapping scales.
- Marmot Doesn’t Roll Up A marmot’s real defenses are vigilance, alarm calls, and retreating into its burrow, not curling into a ball.
- The Behavior’s Name This defensive curling behavior, seen in both the hedgehog and pangolin, is called volvation.

Why Body Armor Decides the Strategy
- Spines vs Scales Hedgehog spines and pangolin scales are both hard, protective coverings, well-suited to a curl-up defense.
- Marmots Have Neither Marmots have soft fur, not spines or scales. Rolling up would expose their whole body, so fleeing works better for them.
- A Real Vulnerability, Even So Pangolin scales made it a heavily poached species, since traffickers can simply pick up a curled-up, defenseless animal.

- Pill Bugs Even tiny woodlice, sometimes called pill bugs, use volvation, curling into a ball when disturbed.
- India’s Pangolins India is home to two pangolin species, both protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and both threatened by illegal scale trafficking.
