Timeline

  • In 2018, Khelo India launched as the Khelo India School Games, held in New Delhi.
  • In 2019, it was renamed the Khelo India Youth Games, after the Indian Olympic Association joined the initiative.
  • On 22 February 2020, PM Modi inaugurated the first Khelo India University Games, in Cuttack.
  • Also in February-March 2020, the first Khelo India Winter Games were held. They spanned Leh and Gulmarg, with 955 athletes.

Must Know

  • Khelo India is one of the sports institutions surveyed in GK0007. Here, it gets standalone treatment.
  • Khelo India is run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, implemented largely through the Sports Authority of India.
  • Its game series today include the Youth Games, University Games, Winter Games, and Para Games.
  • “Khelo” means “play” in Hindi, so Khelo India roughly translates to “Play India”, its unofficial motto.

Good to Know

  • The Khelo India Talent Identification and Development Scheme shortlists the top 1,000 young athletes. Each gets an annual scholarship of ₹5 lakh, for up to 8 years.
  • The scheme’s first scholarship batch, 734 athletes, was cleared in July 2018.
  • Khelo India also accredits private and state sports academies. This widens its talent pipeline beyond facilities run directly by the Sports Authority of India.

Test Yourself

1. Khelo India launched in 2018 as which of these events, held in New Delhi?

Great to Know

  • Khelo India split into age- and terrain-specific game series: School, Youth, University, and Winter. Each series reaches athletes a single annual event never could.
  • Running Winter Games in Leh and Gulmarg specifically signals something. India’s sports policy now treats Himalayan winter sports as a real talent pool, not an afterthought.
  • Pairing games with a direct scholarship pipeline links two things that used to be separate: identifying talent, and actually funding it long enough to matter.

Current Affairs

  • On 1 August 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a revamped Khelo India Scheme, alongside enhanced Assistance to National Sports Federations (ANSFs). The combined outlay runs to ₹36,441 crore, for 2026-27 to 2030-31. This is nearly eight times the previous scheme’s outlay, described by the government as India’s most ambitious sports development programme since Independence. (Source: PIB)
  • Two new school-level initiatives were introduced: Khelo India Feeder Schools (KIFS) and Khelo India Utkrishta Vidyalayas (KIUV). Both aim to integrate sports with mainstream education, for early talent identification.
  • A new Emerging Khelo India Athletes (E-KIAs) category was created alongside the existing Khelo India Athletes programme. This expands the structured athlete-development ecosystem by nearly ten times.
  • The government will establish a National Coach Accreditation Board (NCAB), to standardise coaching qualifications and strengthen professional standards for coaches and support staff.
  • The revamped scheme sets a clear progression pathway: from grassroots competitions, to Khelo India, to the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). It is also aligned with India’s longer-term sporting ambitions, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and a future Olympic and Paralympic Games bid.
