- Geologist H.B. Medlicott applied the name “Gondwana System” to a distinctive rock sequence there, in the 1870s.
- Austrian geologist Eduard Suess later extended the name to the entire ancestral southern supercontinent.
- The Gondwana rock system formed during the Permian period, roughly 250-300 million years ago. It contains India’s major coal-bearing formations.

- Gondwana coalfields contribute about 98% of India’s total coal production, concentrated along the Damodar, Son, Mahanadi, Godavari and Wardha river valleys.
- The Damodar Valley alone hosts several distinct Gondwana formations: Karharbari, Barakar, Barren Measures, and Raniganj.
- The Barakar Formation is one of India’s most significant coal-bearing strata within this sequence.
- A uniform Glossopteris flora dominated the entire Gondwana supercontinent during the Permian period, evidence used to reconstruct the ancient landmass’s extent.
