In 1946, farmers in Gujarat‘s Kaira district were trapped in a milk monopoly. One man organised them against it. The cooperative he built still exists today. You know it as Amul.

Patel leads Kaira’s farmers to register the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union, against Polson Dairy’s buying monopoly.
1949

Patel hires Kurien as a young dairy engineer, to fix machinery. Kurien later becomes General Manager.
1963
Wins the Ramon Magsaysay Award
Patel receives the award for Community Leadership, for coordinating government and farmer enterprise in the milk supply.
1970s – 1994
Retires, then dies
Patel retires as the union’s chairman in the 1970s. He dies in 1994, having led it for nearly three decades.
Founder, not just a name before Kurien: Verghese Kurien is far better known today, as the “Father of the White Revolution.” But it was Patel who built the cooperative and hired Kurien in 1949, not the other way round.

Must Know
- Tribhuvandas Patel was born on 22 October 1903, in Anand, Kaira district, Gujarat.
- He studied at Gujarat Vidyapith, an institution founded during Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement.
- He took part in the freedom struggle, and was jailed during the 1930 Salt Satyagraha.
- Milk traders and Polson Dairy held an effective monopoly buying milk from Kaira’s farmers, for Bombay’s milk supply.
- The farmers appealed to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who advised them to form a cooperative. He sent Morarji Desai to help organise them.
- On 14 December 1946, Tribhuvandas Patel led the farmers to register the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited. See IndEco0201 — Amul for how that union grew into today’s cooperative.
- It began small: just two village dairy societies, collecting a combined 247 litres of milk.
- In 1949, Patel hired a young engineer, Verghese Kurien, to help with the union’s machinery. Kurien later became its General Manager.
- Patel served as the union’s chairman for nearly three decades, until his retirement in the 1970s. He died in 1994.
Good to Know
- In 1948, the union began pasteurising milk for the Bombay Milk Scheme, its first major supply contract.
- The union built a three-tier model: village societies, a district union, and later a state federation. This became known as the “Anand Pattern.”
- The Anand Pattern was later replicated across India, under Operation Flood from the 1970s onward.
- In 1963, Patel received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, for coordinating government and private enterprise to improve milk supply.
- In 1964, he received the Padma Bhushan for social service.
- Beyond dairy work, Patel served as President of the Harijan Sevak Samiti from 1948 to 1983, working against untouchability and alcoholism.

Great to Know
- Don’t confuse Patel’s role with Kurien’s. Patel was the organiser: he mobilised the farmers, built the cooperative, and hired Kurien in 1949. Kurien then supplied the engineering and management skill that scaled it up, and later became famous as the “Father of the White Revolution.”
- The Kaira union is the cooperative that later created the Amul brand. Amul itself is a product brand, not the union’s original name.
- Don’t confuse the 1946 Kaira cooperative with Operation Flood. Kaira was one district’s cooperative. Operation Flood, launched decades later, was the nationwide programme that copied Kaira’s own Anand Pattern across India.
