What Vidyanjali Is
- Definition Vidyanjali connects Government and Government-aided schools with volunteers. These include working professionals, retired teachers and officials, homemakers, NGOs, CSR partners, and the Indian diaspora.
- Ministry It’s an initiative of the Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Education.
- Vidyanjali 2.0 The expanded version, Vidyanjali 2.0, was launched nationally on 7 September 2021 by PM Narendra Modi. It is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
- Scale As of June 2026, 8,44,925 schools and 5,62,296 volunteers have registered on the Vidyanjali portal. This has benefited over 2.04 crore students.

The Two Contribution Tracks
- Knowledge Vidyanjali Volunteers help with subject mentoring, career counselling, and workshops on AI and coding. They also support children with special needs, and sports or cultural activities.
- Asset Vidyanjali Contributions cover teaching-learning materials, ICT facilities, laboratories, sanitation infrastructure, and renewable energy solutions.
Registration and How It Fits Together
- NGOs NGOs register using their NGO DARPAN Unique ID, issued by NITI Aayog and verified through the DARPAN Portal.
- CSR CSR organisations register with documents like PAN, GST, or Udyam registration. They can then choose between CSR Bulk Engagement, supporting many schools at once, or the Adopt-a-School Model, giving sustained support to one school.
- Approvals States and Union Territories approve most NGO and CSR registrations. Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) are approved centrally instead.
- Samagra Shiksha Vidyanjali complements Samagra Shiksha, the government’s own centrally sponsored school-education scheme. It channels voluntary and private support alongside that government funding, rather than replacing it.

- Pilot vs. Scale Vidyanjali’s 2016 pilot and its 2021 relaunch are easy to conflate, but only the 2021 version, “Vidyanjali 2.0,” achieved national scale. The NEP 2020 framework gave it a clearer mandate and a dedicated digital portal.
- Type vs. Scale The scheme’s structure separates “what you give” from “how much you give.” Knowledge Vidyanjali and Asset Vidyanjali split contribution type, while CSR Bulk Engagement and Adopt-a-School split contribution scale, for corporate donors specifically.
