India has never run a train faster than about 180 km/h. That is about to change.

- The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) builds and manages India’s high-speed rail corridors. It was incorporated on 12 February 2016 under the Companies Act, 2013.
- India’s first high-speed rail line is the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, also called the bullet train project.
- The corridor runs 508.17 km, through Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, with 12 stations.
- Trains will run at a maximum design speed of 350 km/h, with an operational speed of around 320 km/h.
- The project uses Japanese Shinkansen technology, under a bilateral agreement between India and Japan.

- The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funds most of the project through a soft loan. It covers about 81% of the cost.
- The JICA loan carries a 0.1% interest rate for its first 15 years, rising to 0.2% after that. It has a 50-year repayment period, including a 15-year moratorium.
- The project’s sanctioned cost was originally ₹1.08 lakh crore. As of early 2026, NHSRCL was finalising a revised estimate near ₹1.98 lakh crore, an escalation of roughly 83%. Years lost to land acquisition drove most of that increase.
- India originally planned to use Japan’s Shinkansen E5 trainset for the corridor. As of 2026, India has asked Japan for the newer E10 model instead. Talks between the two countries are still ongoing.
- As of NHSRCL’s May 2026 progress update, the corridor had 352 km of viaduct and 446 km of pier work complete. Noise barriers had also gone up over 291 km of the elevated sections.
- All 1,389.5 hectares of land needed for the project had been acquired by late March 2026. All 1,651 utilities along the route had been shifted by then too.
- NHSRCL has targeted the first operational stretch, a roughly 50 km section between Surat and Bilimora, to open in 2026, ahead of the full corridor.

- The Union Budget 2026-27 announced seven new high-speed rail corridors: Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi, and Varanasi-Siliguri.
- Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has set a long-term goal of 7,000 km of dedicated high-speed passenger corridors by 2047, under the Viksit Bharat vision.
- Mumbai-Ahmedabad is designed to serve as a proof of concept. It is meant to build India’s own institutional and technical experience in high-speed rail, before the newer corridors begin construction.
- Once complete, MAHSR is expected to roughly halve current travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. That route is currently served mainly by road, air, and conventional rail.

- A PIB backgrounder, dated 3 July 2026, gives the full picture. Seven future high-speed rail corridors, covering nearly 4,000 km, are expected to attract around ₹16 lakh crore in investment. Based on MAHSR, a standardised construction template is being developed for these future corridors. It sets unified engineering standards for piers, viaducts, tracks, station structures, overhead electrification, and signalling. Only foundations will vary, based on local soil conditions. - MAHSR also introduces J-Slab ballastless track technology to India for the first time. On manufacturing, Integral Coach Factory (ICF), with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), is designing and manufacturing indigenous 280 km/h high-speed trainsets. A new complex called “Aditya” has opened in Bengaluru, to develop B-28 coaches. - The Union Budget 2026-27 announced the Delhi-Varanasi High Speed Rail Corridor, one of the seven new corridors under NHSRCL.
- The corridor runs roughly 813-865 km, through Delhi, Noida, Jewar Airport, Mathura, Agra, Etawah, Kannauj, Lucknow, Raebareli, Prayagraj, and Bhadohi, ending at Varanasi. Reports differ slightly on the exact station count and total length, since detailed alignment work is still ongoing.
- Trains are planned to run at a maximum speed of 350 km/h, with an operational speed of around 320 km/h — the same specifications as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.
- Once operational, Delhi to Varanasi is expected to take about 3.5 to 4 hours. Delhi to Lucknow is expected to take about 2 hours 10 minutes.
- A separate 124 km branch line will connect Lucknow and Ayodhya, cutting that leg’s travel time to about 35-40 minutes.
- The project’s estimated cost is around ₹2.3 lakh crore.
- NHSRCL has targeted 2031 for completion. As of 2026, the corridor is still in the planning and pre-construction stage. This target date is not yet fully settled. Some earlier estimates placed completion as late as 2041.
