Most Shiva temples put Shiva at the centre. This one doesn’t. Its main deity is a goddess who once marched an army to Mount Kailash to fight him.

1. History and Architecture
- Dedication The temple is dedicated to Meenakshi, a form of the goddess Parvati, and Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva. It marks their divine marriage.
- Construction History Madurai’s history at this site goes back to around the 4th century CE. The temple’s present form was largely built in the 16th-17th centuries.
- Story The Nayak dynasty, especially under kings Vishwanatha Nayak and Thirumalai Nayak, expanded the temple into the sprawling complex seen today. Earlier, the Chola dynasty had added shrines and mandapams in the 10th century.
- Gopurams The temple has 14 gopurams, or gateway towers. The tallest, the southern gopuram, rises more than 170 feet.
- Sculptures The gopurams are covered in painted stucco figures of gods, celestial beings, and animal mounts. The whole complex holds more than 30,000 sculptures.
- City Layout Madurai’s streets radiate outward from the temple in concentric rings. Locals describe the pattern as shaped like a lotus flower.

2. Legend of Meenakshi
- Story According to the Tamil epic Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, King Malayadhvaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai performed a yajna asking for a son. A three-year-old girl emerged from the fire instead, born with three breasts.
- Story A divine voice told the king the third breast would vanish the day she met her future husband. The king raised her as his heir anyway, and she grew into a powerful warrior queen.
- Story Meenakshi conquered neighbouring kingdoms and eventually marched her army toward Mount Kailash, Shiva’s abode, to challenge him. The moment she saw him, her third breast disappeared.
- Result She recognised Shiva as the husband foretold in the prophecy. Shiva then came to Madurai, taking the name Sundara Pandya, to marry her.
- Instead This is unlike most Shiva temples in India. Meenakshi, not Sundareswarar, is treated as the principal deity here.

3. The Temple Today
- Chithirai Festival The temple’s marriage story is re-enacted every year at the Chithirai Festival, also called Meenakshi Tirukalyanam, which draws millions of visitors to Madurai each April.
- Mechanism Traditionally, the temple performs a Kumbabhishekam, or consecration ceremony, roughly every 12 years, renewing the temple’s sanctity and refreshing its sculptures and towers.
- Story A fire on 2 February 2018 gutted the Veeravasantharayar Mandapam in the temple’s eastern tower. Restoration work delayed the Kumbabhishekam that would otherwise have been due around 2021.
- Takeaway The temple sits at the heart of Madurai’s old city. Its scale and continuous worship history over centuries make it one of the defining landmarks of Tamil Nadu.

4. 2026 Kumbabhishekam and Chithirai Festival
