Delhi Lakshmi Yojana: Delhi’s Planned Cash-Transfer Scheme for Women

A party promised Rs 2,100 a month to Delhi’s women, and lost the election anyway. The winner’s own version took over a year, and a rebrand, to actually launch.

Timeline

• 8 February 2025: Delhi votes; the BJP wins 48 of 70 seats, ending 27 years out of power.
• 8 March 2025: Delhi’s Cabinet approves Mahila Samridhi Yojana, Rs 2,500 a month.
• 14 July 2026: The scheme is renamed Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, still not yet paying anyone.
• 28 August 2026 (planned): Payments are set to begin, timed to Raksha Bandhan.

• Eligible women must be Delhi residents for at least 10 years, with family income under Rs 2.5 lakh.
• Only one woman per eligible family, the eldest, can receive the payment.

• Rekha Gupta, MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was sworn in as Chief Minister on 20 February 2025.
• Arvind Kejriwal, AAP’s founder and three-term Chief Minister, lost his own seat that election.
• A separate, unrelated national scheme also uses the name “Mahila Samridhi Yojana,” for micro-credit.
• Applicants need a signed endorsement letter, from their local MP or MLA, to apply.
