Must Know
- The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare launched Kisan e-Mitra in September 2023. It was India's first AI chatbot built into a major central government scheme.
- Kisan e-Mitra answers farmer questions about the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme. It covers application status, payment details, and reasons for ineligibility.
- Farmers can ask questions by voice or by text. Kisan e-Mitra replies in the farmer's own language, in both text and audio.
- The chatbot understands and replies in 11 Indic languages. This works through Bhashini, India's National Language Translation Mission.
Good to Know
- In February 2024, Wadhwani AI led a major upgrade to Kisan e-Mitra. This upgrade added a Large Language Model (LLM) to generate its responses.
- By July 2025, more than 4 lakh farmers had enrolled with Kisan e-Mitra. Over 2.9 lakh farmers received support through it since the February 2024 upgrade.
- Kisan e-Mitra has resolved more than 5 million farmer grievances since that February 2024 upgrade. It now works across 28 states and 8 Union Territories.
- Farmers can reach Kisan e-Mitra anytime, day or night. It's available through the PM-KISAN portal and the PM-KISAN mobile app.

Great to Know
- Kisan e-Mitra was originally built with support from the EkStep Foundation and Bhashini. PM-KISAN itself is a huge scheme: it gives ₹6,000 a year to more than 9 crore farming families.
- Kisan e-Mitra later became one of several digital tools folded into the Digital Agriculture Mission. This shows how a single-scheme chatbot can grow into wider government infrastructure.
- Kisan e-Mitra reflects a broader shift in how India delivers welfare schemes. Grievances once handled manually are now resolved through an AI-first, self-service tool.
