Shyama Charan Shukla

His father was the first Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Decades later, he became Chief Minister of the same state three times himself.

Shyama Charan Shukla was born on 27 February 1925, in Raipur, then in the Central Provinces and Berar.
He was the son of Ravi Shankar Shukla, Madhya Pradesh’s first Chief Minister.
As a teenager, he took part in the Quit India Movement of 1942, inspired by his father’s own activism.
He was first elected as an MLA in 1957, from the seat later known as Rajim (renamed after a 1962 delimitation).
He served three times as Chief Minister of undivided Madhya Pradesh. His terms ran 26 March 1969 to 28 January 1972, 23 December 1975 to 30 April 1977, and 9 December 1989 to 1 March 1990.
In 1999, he was elected to the Lok Sabha, from Mahasamund, in present-day Chhattisgarh.
He died on 14 February 2007, in Raipur, the city of his birth.

He studied technology at Banaras Hindu University, and law at Nagpur University.
He represented his Rajim constituency across seven MLA terms, between 1957 and 1998. He lost the seat in 1977, though, amid the post-Emergency Janata wave, and did not reclaim it until 1990.
His third and final term, from December 1989, grew out of a factional Congress alliance. He teamed with Madhavrao Scindia and Motilal Vora, against rival party strongman Arjun Singh.
That term lasted only about three months. Its collapse, amid continued Congress infighting, is widely seen as helping the BJP win Madhya Pradesh for the first time, in the 1990 state election.
His younger brother, Vidya Charan Shukla, was also a prominent Congress leader, and a nine-time Lok Sabha MP.
His son, Amitesh Shukla, later also represented Rajim, in the Chhattisgarh state assembly.

His long political career, spanning 1957 to 2004, reflects the deep, multi-generational roots the Shukla family held in the Chhattisgarh region.
India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp honouring him, in 2012.
Raipur, his birthplace, later became part of the separate state of Chhattisgarh, carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000.
