• Dr. D.Y. Patil (Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil) was an Indian educationist, philanthropist, and politician. He was born on 22 October 1935, in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, to an agricultural family.
• He founded the D.Y. Patil Group of educational institutions in 1983, starting with the Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology, in Navi Mumbai.
• The Group has since grown to more than 180 institutions. These include universities, medical colleges, engineering institutes, and hospitals.
• He served as Governor of Tripura from 27 November 2009 to 21 March 2013. He then became Governor of Bihar, from 22 March 2013 to 26 November 2014. He also briefly held additional charge as Governor of West Bengal, during his Bihar term.
• He received the Padma Shri in 1991, for his contributions to education and social service.
• He died on 4 August 2026, at his residence in Kolhapur, after a prolonged illness. He was 90.

From Mayor to Governor, and a Stadium Good to Know

• He completed his graduation at Rajaram College, Kolhapur, then studied law at Shivaji University, graduating with first-class honours.
• Before his gubernatorial appointments, he built an earlier political career in Kolhapur. He served as the city’s Mayor, from 1957 to 1962, then twice as an MLA from the Panhala constituency, in 1967 and 1972.
• He stepped back from active politics after election defeats in the late 1970s, before returning decades later as a Governor.
• The DY Patil Stadium, on his university’s Nerul campus in Navi Mumbai, was inaugurated on 4 March 2008. Architect Hafeez Contractor designed it, at a cost of around ₹100 crore.
• At its 2008 opening, the stadium was widely described as India’s second-largest cricket ground. Larger venues have since been built, including the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, so that ranking no longer holds today.
• The stadium hosted the IPL 2008 final, and the IPL 2010 season, including that year’s final. It was not, however, the continuous home ground of Mumbai Indians across those years; the team played its 2009 home matches at Wankhede Stadium.

A Lifetime Spent Building Great to Know

• He belongs to a small group of Indian educationists who turned personal institution-building into a career of public service. See ModHist0276 — Bhaurao Patil for another Maharashtra educationist who did the same, decades earlier.
• He began with a single engineering college. He ended his life running one of India’s largest private education networks. That is a rare instance of institution-building spanning an entire working lifetime, from 1983 until his death in 2026.
• His original 1983 institution, RAIT, has since been folded into D.Y. Patil Deemed to be University, which holds a NAAC A++ accreditation.
• He was survived by four sons and one daughter. His funeral was held with state honours, at D.Y. Patil Medical College, Kolhapur, on 5 August 2026.
