Two of India’s national sports awards now carry the exact same name. They are not the same award. One rewards a single great year. The other rewards an entire career.

The Top Award
- Khel Ratna The top award is the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. It recognises the single most outstanding performance over the previous 4 years.
The Arjuna Award
- Consistent Excellence The Arjuna Award recognises consistent good performance over 4 years, not a lifetime of achievement. It comes with a statuette, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹15 lakh.
The Dronacharya Award
- For Coaches The Dronacharya Award goes to coaches, for producing medal winners at major international events.
Lifetime Achievement
- Dhyan Chand Award The Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement honours a sportsperson’s contribution, both during their career and after retirement.
Who Presents Them
- Rashtrapati Bhavan The President of India presents all these awards, each year, at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Where the Descriptions Get Swapped
- UPSC 2023 Two of these descriptions are frequently swapped in exam options. The Khel Ratna, not the Arjuna Award, is for the most outstanding performance over 4 years. The Arjuna Award, not the Khel Ratna, is for consistent excellence — neither is a lifetime-achievement award. A Fifth, Separate Award
- Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar The Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar is a separate award altogether. It recognises corporate entities and organisations that promote sports, not individual retired sportspersons.

- 1961 The Arjuna Award, instituted in 1961, is the oldest of the current National Sports Awards.
Named for a Teacher of Archery
- 1985 The Dronacharya Award followed in 1985. It’s named after the Mahabharata’s teacher of archery.
The Top Award’s Original Name
- 1991-92 The top award was instituted in 1991-92, as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. It carries a cash prize of ₹25 lakh.
The 2021 Rename
- 6 Aug 2021 On 6 August 2021, the government renamed it the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, after hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
An Informal Name, Made Formal
- 2002 The Lifetime Achievement award, instituted in 2002, had already been informally called the “Dhyan Chand Award” for years, well before the 2021 rename.
A Real Naming Overlap
- Two Awards, One Name This created a real overlap: two different awards now carry Dhyan Chand’s name. The Khel Ratna rewards a great 4-year run; the Lifetime Achievement award rewards an entire career.

- Sachin Tendulkar Sports awards form their own separate track, distinct from the Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards. But the two tracks do sometimes cross.
