  • The British and French East India Companies both operated trading posts along India’s southeastern Carnatic coast.
  • Three Carnatic Wars were fought between them, from 1746 to 1763.
  • Each war was really the Indian front of a wider European war. The First Carnatic War mirrored the War of the Austrian Succession.
  • The French governor, Joseph François Dupleix, captured the British trading post of Madras in 1746.
  • The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) ended this war. It restored Madras to the British, in exchange for the French keeping a fortress they had captured in North America.

Dupleix’s Puppet Kings Need to Know

  • The Second Carnatic War began when local succession disputes broke out, for the thrones of Hyderabad and the Carnatic.
  • Dupleix backed his own candidates for both thrones. He installed Muzaffar Jung as Nizam of Hyderabad, and Chanda Sahib as Nawab of the Carnatic.
  • The British backed a rival claimant, Muhammad Ali Khan Walajah, and defended him at Trichinopoly.
  • On 31 August 1751, a young company clerk named Robert Clive seized Arcot, Chanda Sahib’s own capital, with just 500 men.
  • Clive then held Arcot against a 53-day siege. This drew enemy troops away from Trichinopoly, easing the pressure there.
  • Dupleix was recalled to France in 1754. French ambitions in India had depended heavily on his own personal drive.

The Battle That Decided India Good to Know

  • The Third Carnatic War mirrored the Seven Years’ War being fought in Europe.
  • On 22 January 1760, British forces under Eyre Coote met the French under the Comte de Lally at Wandiwash.
  • A lucky British artillery shot hit the French gunpowder store. This shattered the French left flank.
  • The French line collapsed. Lally retreated to Pondicherry, and his best general, the Marquis de Bussy, was captured.
  • The British then besieged Pondicherry itself, the main French base in India.
  • Wandiwash is widely seen as the battle that ended real French military power in India.

  • France could not fortify these posts, or keep a standing army there. This ended any real French political power in India.
  • Dupleix’s strategy of installing friendly local rulers was an early version of the subsidiary alliance system.
  • The British later refined and expanded this exact idea, across the rest of India.
  • Wandiwash and the Treaty of Paris together cleared the way for unchallenged British expansion across the subcontinent.
  • Mysore, under Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, became the next major regional power to resist that British expansion. Read more: ModHist0073 — Mysore Under Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan.
