Depth and the Offshore Oil Industry
  • Shallow Sea The North Sea covers about 570,000 sq km. It is relatively shallow, with an average depth of around 95 metres.
  • Norwegian Trench Its deepest point lies near the Norwegian Trench, plunging to about 725 metres.
  • Oil and Gas Geologists discovered oil and natural gas here in the early 1960s. Production has run since 1959. The North Sea is now the world’s most productive offshore drilling region, with proven reserves of about 23 billion barrels of oil.
  • Norway and UK Norway and the United Kingdom, Europe’s leading oil producers, depend heavily on North Sea oil for a large share of their income.
