- Fold Mountains Fold mountains form when tectonic plates collide, buckling and folding rock layers upward. They are the most common mountain type. Examples: the Himalayas, the Alps, the Andes, and the Appalachians.
- Block Mountains Block mountains form through faulting, where movement along fault lines lifts some blocks of crust while others subside. Examples: the Vosges (France), the Black Forest (Germany), and the Satpura and Vindhya ranges (India).
- Common Trap Exam questions often wrongly pair a block mountain, like the Vosges, with “fold mountain,” or vice versa. The two form through entirely different tectonic processes.

- Rift Valleys Block mountains and rift valleys are two sides of the same fault-driven process. The Rhine Valley, between the Vosges and the Black Forest, is the subsided block; the mountains on either side are the uplifted ones.
