Types of Mountains (Fold, Block, and Volcanic)

The Alps and the Vosges sit less than 100 km apart in Europe. One is a fold mountain. The other is a block mountain, built by a completely different process.

Three Ways to Build a Mountain
Same planet, three different tectonic processes
Fold Mountains
Plates collide, rock layers buckle and fold upward. Examples: Himalayas, Alps, Andes, Appalachians.
Block Mountains
Faulting lifts some blocks of crust, drops others. Examples: Vosges (France), Black Forest (Germany), Sierra Nevada (USA), Satpura and Vindhya (India).
Volcanic Mountains
Magma erupts and builds up as lava, ash, and rock. Examples: Kilimanjaro, Mount Fuji, Mount Rainier.

Fold vs Block Mountains
  • Fold Mountains Fold mountains form when tectonic plates collide, buckling and folding rock layers upward. They are the most common mountain type. Examples: the Himalayas, the Alps, the Andes, and the Appalachians.
  • Block Mountains Block mountains form through faulting, where movement along fault lines lifts some blocks of crust while others subside. Examples: the Vosges (France), the Black Forest (Germany), and the Satpura and Vindhya ranges (India).
  • Common Trap Exam questions often wrongly pair a block mountain, like the Vosges, with “fold mountain,” or vice versa. The two form through entirely different tectonic processes.

Volcanic Mountains and the Rift Connection
  • Volcanic Mountains Volcanic mountains form when magma from beneath the crust reaches the surface, erupting as lava, ash, and rock that build up over time. Examples: Kilimanjaro, Mount Fuji, and Mount Rainier.
  • Rift Valleys Block mountains and rift valleys are two sides of the same fault-driven process. The Rhine Valley, between the Vosges and the Black Forest, is the subsided block; the mountains on either side are the uplifted ones.
  • Not Mutually Exclusive A single mountain range can show more than one process at work. Fold mountains, for instance, often have volcanic peaks along their length too, where plate collision also triggers melting.
