Keep the hosts separate from the champion

The 2026 FIFA World Cup ran from 11 June to 19 July 2026. Counting both dates gives 39 days.

FIFA is football’s international governing body. Its full French name is Fédération Internationale de Football Association.

The USA, Mexico and Canada became the first three countries to co-host a men’s World Cup. Hosting means providing venues and helping stage matches. Hosting does not make a country the champion.

The field grew from 32 to 48 teams. That added 16 teams to the previous field. More teams meant more group matches and an extra knockout round.

Follow the teams before counting the matches

The teams entered 12 groups of four. A group is a small set of teams that play one another.

The top two teams in each group advanced. Twelve groups therefore supplied 24 teams. The eight best third-placed teams joined them.

The diagram explains why third place did not always mean elimination. There were 12 third-placed teams, but only eight advanced. Four third-placed teams therefore went out.

A knockout match sends its winner into the next round. The Round of 32 leads to the Round of 16. Quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final follow.

The two losing semi-finalists also played a third-place match. That match decided the bronze position, rather than a place in the final.

Why were there 104 matches?

Each four-team group contains six different pairings. Twelve groups therefore produced 72 group matches.

The knockout rounds contained 16, eight, four, two and one matches. Those rounds totalled 31 matches. Adding the third-place match gave 32 more matches.

The full count was 72 + 32 = 104 matches. A finalist played three group games and five knockout games. That made eight matches for each finalist.

In 1998, the field had expanded from 24 to 32 teams. The 2026 expansion changed the field size again. Do not confuse either expansion with the number of host countries.

Count countries and host cities separately

The tournament used 16 host cities. Eleven were in the USA, three in Mexico and two in Canada.

• Canada: Toronto and Vancouver.
• Mexico: Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey.
• USA: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and Los Angeles.
• The other US hosts were Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

Mexico City staged the opening match. The final took place in the New York/New Jersey area.

Mexico became the first country to host or co-host the men’s tournament three times. Its earlier editions were 1970 and 1986. Canada hosted the men’s World Cup for the first time.

A debut means a team’s first appearance

Four teams made their World Cup debut: Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan. Cape Verde is also called Cabo Verde.

Curaçao became the smallest participating country by population. Its population was around 150,000. The comparison concerns population, rather than land area.

Uzbekistan became the first Central Asian country to reach the men’s World Cup. Cape Verde and Curaçao belong to different regions. Jordan is in West Asia.

A first appearance does not mean a first title. A team can make its debut without reaching the final.

Separate normal time from extra time

Spain beat Argentina 1–0 after extra time. The final remained goalless after the normal 90 minutes.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute. The goal came during extra time. Spain did not win this final through a penalty shoot-out.

Extra time adds playing time after a drawn knockout match. A penalty shoot-out is a separate way to settle a match. The two terms do not mean the same thing.

The victory gave Spain its second World Cup title, after 2010. Argentina entered as the defending champion from 2022. Argentina had already won three titles.

Career totals differ from one tournament’s goals

Kylian Mbappé ended the tournament with 22 career men’s World Cup goals. He passed Lionel Messi’s total of 21.

Mbappé scored twice against England in the third-place match on 18 July 2026. Those goals helped take his career total to 22.

Mbappé also reached 19 non-penalty World Cup goals, a record. Non-penalty goals exclude goals scored from penalty kicks during matches.

Earlier in the tournament, Messi had passed Miroslav Klose’s old record of 16. Messi’s two goals against Austria took his total to 18.

The record holder therefore changed during the same tournament. A report from the group stage can name Messi correctly for that date. A report after the tournament must account for Mbappé’s later total.

Indian roots do not decide the national team represented

Sarpreet Singh represented New Zealand. He became the first player of Indian origin to start a men’s World Cup match.

Singh started New Zealand’s Group G opener against Iran on 15 June 2026. The match finished 2–2.

Singh was born in Auckland and has family roots in Punjab. His father came from Jalandhar. His mother came from Dhada Khurd in Hoshiarpur district.

Family origin and national-team representation are different facts. Singh’s appearance was for New Zealand, rather than India.
