Precision Without a Palace
No Harappan king or capital city has ever been identified, yet weights held to within 0.5–1% turn up unchanged from Mohenjo-daro to Lothal — organised trade, quite possibly a shared standard, with no direct evidence of one central authority behind it.
Harappan weights are mostly cubes cut from banded grey chert, though a few use slate, alabaster, quartzite, or jasper.
The lower denominations follow a strict binary progression: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and on up to 12,800.
Above that point, the system switches to decimal multiples of 16. This let Harappans handle both small daily transactions and large-scale trade with the same underlying units.
The smallest known weight is 0.856 grams. The most common weight, the 16-ratio unit, weighs 13.65 grams.
These weights have turned up at sites across the civilisation’s territory, from Mohenjo-daro and Harappa to Lothal and beyond. Their values stay remarkably consistent from site to site.
Linear Measures and Scales Good to Know
An ivory ruler found at Lothal, dated to around 2400 BCE, is calibrated to divisions of about 1.6 mm.
A broken ivory scale, also from Lothal, carries decimal subdivisions as fine as 1.704 mm. That is the smallest graduated measure known anywhere in the Bronze Age.
The Mohenjo-daro ruler uses a unit of about 33.5 mm (1.32 inches), sometimes called the “Indus inch.” Its decimal subdivisions are accurate to within 0.005 of an inch.
Ten of these units make up a larger standard close to a cubit, roughly 13.2 inches.
A small bronze rod found at Harappa, just 1.5 inches long with four divisions, is the only other linear scale recovered from the civilisation.
A terracotta scale from Kalibangan uses a different unit, close to 17.5 cm. This shows some regional variation alongside the shared core system.

What This Precision Tells Us Great to Know
Many cubical weights are balanced to within 0.5–1% of their intended value — a genuinely high level of precision for a Bronze Age civilisation.
That precision, held consistently across a huge territory, points to organised trade. It may also point to some shared administrative standard, even without direct evidence of a central authority.
Evidence of Scientific Knowledge
The same standardised weights and graduated scales were tested directly on UPSC Civil Services Preliminary 2026, GS Paper I. That question asked what Harappan archaeological finds reveal.
The weights and scales were read as evidence of the Harappans’ scientific and mathematical knowledge. That is a separate inference from the one drawn about Harappan houses in the same question.
