A gram of activated carbon can hide a surface area bigger than a football field, folded into pores too small to see. That’s the whole trick behind why it’s so good at pulling pollutants out of water and air.

What Makes Activated Carbon Work
- Adsorption, Not AbsorptionActivated carbon removes pollutants by adsorption. Contaminant molecules stick to the surface of its pores, rather than soaking in the way a sponge absorbs water.
- Enormous Surface Area“Activation” is a processing step that opens up a vast internal network of micropores in the carbon. This gives it a surface area that can reach 500 to 1,500 square metres per gram. That’s a large fraction of a football field, packed into a handful of granules.
- Strong Pollutant TrapThat huge surface area gives activated carbon a strong capacity to adsorb heavy metals, organic chemicals, and other contaminants from effluent streams. This makes it widely used to remediate polluted water and air.
- Made From Carbon-Rich WasteActivated carbon can be produced relatively easily and cheaply from carbon-rich materials, including agricultural and other environmental wastes. Coconut shells, rice husks, wood, and coal are all common feedstocks.

How It’s Made
- Two-Step ProcessRaw carbon-rich material is first carbonised by heating without much oxygen. It is then “activated,” treated with steam, hot air, or chemicals, to etch open its internal pore network and dramatically boost its surface area.
- Pore Sizes MatterThe pore network spans micropores, under 2 nanometres, which do most of the actual adsorbing. Larger mesopores and macropores act as channels, carrying pollutant molecules to those micropores.
- Granular or PowderedActivated carbon is sold as granules (GAC), for use in household and industrial filters. It’s also sold as a fine powder (PAC), often dosed directly into water during treatment.

- Water and Air TreatmentActivated carbon filters are used in municipal and household drinking-water systems and industrial effluent treatment. Air purifiers and HVAC systems use it too, to trap gaseous pollutants and odours.
- MedicineMedicinal-grade activated charcoal is used to treat certain poisonings and drug overdoses. Its porous surface binds toxins in the digestive tract before they can be absorbed into the bloodstream. It is listed among the World Health Organization’s essential medicines.
