Why the Phosphorus Cycle Is Different
- No Atmospheric Phase Phosphorus doesn’t exist in a gaseous form under normal conditions. This means it has no atmospheric phase, unlike carbon or nitrogen.
- Rock Is the Source Phosphorus’s primary reservoir is rock, especially rock containing the mineral apatite.
- Weathering Releases It Weathering breaks down these rocks over time. This releases phosphate ions into the soil, where plants can take them up.
- A Limiting Nutrient Phosphorus is often the nutrient that limits growth in aquatic ecosystems, since it’s scarcer and slower-moving than carbon or nitrogen.

- Carbon Cycle Carbon moves through the atmosphere constantly, as carbon dioxide, released and absorbed by countless natural processes.
- Nitrogen Cycle Nitrogen also has a large atmospheric reservoir. Nitrogen gas makes up about 78 percent of the air itself.
- Sulphur Cycle Sulphur does have some atmospheric movement, largely through volcanic activity and industrial combustion, though it’s far smaller than carbon’s.
- Phosphorus Stands Apart Phosphorus alone has no meaningful gas phase. Rock weathering is its only real point of entry into the biological cycle.
