NIRANTAR coordinates India’s environmental research bodies through four verticals — without creating a single new institution or adding a single new post.

âś… Must Know
What NIRANTAR stands for
- NIRANTAR is the National Institute for Research and Application of Natural Resources to Transform, Adapt and Build Resilience. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change launched it in January 2026.
A platform, not a new institution
- NIRANTAR creates no new organisation and adds no new staff. It coordinates the Ministry’s existing institutions, breaking down the silos between them.
Ecosystem Survey and Analysis
- This vertical is led by the Botanical Survey of India, Kolkata. It covers ecosystem-level surveying and analysis across the country.
A frequent exam trap
- The Research and Management of Ecosystem Service vertical is led by ICFRE, Dehradun, not the Central Zoo Authority. Mixing up these two is a common mistake.
đź’ˇ Good to Know
Capacity Development Support
- This vertical is led by the Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal. It focuses on building capacity, not direct field research.
A fourth vertical
- NIRANTAR also runs a Climate Change Support vertical, alongside its three research and capacity-focused verticals.
Why it exists
- NIRANTAR aims to close the gap between scientific research and policy. It wants environmental decisions backed by robust, coordinated data.
Tools it leans on
- The platform uses tools like GIS to align development decisions with conservation goals, working across its different thematic verticals.

🌟 Great to Know
BSI’s own long history
- The Botanical Survey of India, NIRANTAR’s Ecosystem Survey and Analysis lead, was founded in 1890. It predates Indian independence by more than five decades.
A coordination model, not a merger
- NIRANTAR does not merge its member institutions into one body. Each institution keeps its own identity, while NIRANTAR links their work through shared verticals.
Part of a broader MoEFCC pattern
- Coordinating existing bodies through a platform, rather than creating a new one, reflects a broader administrative approach the Ministry has used elsewhere too.
Why lead-institute pairings get tested
- Exam questions on NIRANTAR often test which institute leads which vertical. Getting BSI, ICFRE, and IIFM’s roles mixed up is the most common trap.
