Hydrogels

A hydrogel is mostly water, held together by a polymer network. Doctors use it to release drugs slowly inside the body — but it can’t cool your car’s air-conditioning.

  • Drug Delivery Controlled drug delivery in patients is a genuine, well-established use of hydrogels. Their tunable, biocompatible structure lets them release medication at a controlled rate.
  • Not for AC or Lubricants Hydrogels are not used in mobile air-conditioning systems or the preparation of industrial lubricants. They lack the thermodynamic properties AC systems need, and cannot withstand the pressure and heat industrial lubricants must handle.

  • Tissue Engineering Hydrogels are also used in tissue engineering, where their water-rich structure mimics the natural environment of living cells.
