1. What a NIMZ Is

Definition A National Investment and Manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) is a large, integrated industrial township, planned around manufacturing.
Parent Policy NIMZs are the key implementation instrument of the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP), 2011.
Domestic Focus Unlike a Special Economic Zone, which is export-oriented, a NIMZ is meant to serve India’s own domestic market first.
Size A NIMZ needs a minimum area of 5,000 hectares, or 50 sq km — much larger than most SEZs.

2. India’s First NIMZ

Location India’s first NIMZ to win final approval sits in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh.
Exact Site It falls within the Kanigiri revenue division, spanning the Pamuru and Pedacherlapalli mandals.
Approval Year The Government of India gave it final approval in 2015, under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
Footprint The proposed zone covers about 14,231 acres, or roughly 57.6 sq km.

3. The Other Two Approved NIMZs

Telangana A second NIMZ near Zaheerabad, in Sangareddy district (formerly Medak), also got final approval, in December 2015.
Odisha A third NIMZ at Kalinganagar, in Jajpur district, Odisha, rounds out the three zones with final approval.
Pipeline Beyond these three, 13 more NIMZs across India have received in-principle approval so far.

How a NIMZ Is Governed and Built

Nodal Body The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (formerly DIPP) is the nodal agency for NIMZ approvals.
State Role A state government or its industrial corporation proposes a NIMZ site, then prepares a techno-economic feasibility report for final approval.
Land Use Rule At least 30% of a NIMZ’s total land must be used for actual manufacturing units, under zoning norms.
Single Window A NIMZ is meant to offer single-window statutory clearances, alongside state-of-the-art physical and social infrastructure.

The Prakasam NIMZ’s Scale

Corridor The site falls within the Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC), a broader coastal development corridor.
Investment Projected investment in the zone runs to about Rs 43,700 crore.
Jobs It is expected to create roughly 20,500 direct jobs, and about 29,200 indirect jobs.
Exports Annual exports from the zone are projected at around Rs 24,000 crore, once fully developed.
