One state touches eight others. One touches just one. And the state with Pakistan on its border isn’t even the one with India’s longest international frontier.

India’s State Boundaries at a Glance
Who borders the most, who borders the least, and the record everyone gets wrong
Most Interstate Borders
Uttar Pradesh — 8 States
No other state touches as many neighbours. UP also borders Delhi and, internationally, Nepal.
Fewest Interstate Borders
Sikkim & Meghalaya — Just One
Sikkim touches only West Bengal; Meghalaya touches only Assam. Neither is uniquely alone in this.
Longest International Border
West Bengal — 2,200 km
Shared with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal — India’s longest international frontier by far.
The Common Misconception
Rajasthan — 1,070 km
Its Pakistan border is real but short — far behind West Bengal’s, despite the common guess.
Count vs. Length
Bordering the most neighbours and holding the longest single frontier are two different records. Uttar Pradesh wins the first, on interstate borders. West Bengal wins the second, on international length. Don’t conflate the two.
🗺️ Interstate Borders
1. Who Borders the Most
- Most Borders Uttar Pradesh borders 8 other Indian states: Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. No other state matches that count.
- Delhi Too Uttar Pradesh also touches Delhi. Delhi is a Union Territory, not a state, so it doesn’t count toward the 8.
- International Uttar Pradesh has one international border too, with Nepal.
- Runner-Up Madhya Pradesh comes close, bordering 5 states directly.
2. Who Borders the Fewest
- Sikkim Sikkim borders only one other Indian state, West Bengal. Its other three borders are entirely international, with China, Nepal, and Bhutan.
- Meghalaya Meghalaya also borders only one other Indian state, Assam. The rest of its boundary runs along Bangladesh.
- Not Unique Sikkim and Meghalaya both fit this description, so neither one is the sole example.
🌐 International Borders
1. The Longest International Border
- West Bengal West Bengal holds India’s longest international border, roughly 2,200 km, shared with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal.
- Rajasthan Rajasthan’s international border, with Pakistan alone, runs only about 1,070 km, far shorter than West Bengal’s.
- Gujarat Gujarat also borders Pakistan, along with a long coastline, but its international land border is still shorter than West Bengal’s combined total.
2. Neighbours, by the Numbers
- Bangladesh West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram all border Bangladesh, making it the neighbour touching the most Indian states.
- Bhutan Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh border Bhutan.
- Nepal Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim all touch Nepal.
- China Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh border China, along the Line of Actual Control.
- Pakistan Only Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat border Pakistan.
- Myanmar Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram border Myanmar.

⚠️ Facts That Trip People Up
1. Common Traps in Border Questions
- Length vs. Count A state bordering many countries doesn’t automatically have the longest border. Rajasthan touches only Pakistan internationally, yet loses on total length to West Bengal, which touches three countries.
- Uniqueness Traps Questions that claim a state is “the only one” doing something are worth checking twice. Sikkim genuinely borders just one Indian state, but so does Meghalaya, which breaks any claim of uniqueness.
- Landlocked, Not Border-Poor Being landlocked, with no coastline, is a separate fact from having few state borders. Delhi is landlocked, but it still touches two states directly, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
Which Claims Are False, and the Answer Key
- Statement 1 is genuinely correct: Uttar Pradesh really does border more states than any other.
- Statement 2 is the trap. Rajasthan’s international border is real but short. West Bengal’s is the true record holder.
- Statement 3 is also a trap. Sikkim fits the description, but Meghalaya does too, so “only” is the wrong word.
