Bihu Festival, Assam

Assam doesn’t just celebrate one Bihu. It celebrates three, spread across the farming year, and only one of them is a happy one.

Three Bihus, One Year Need to Know

  • Bihu is Assam’s major cycle of festivals. There are three of them, each tied to a different stage of the farming year.
  • Rongali Bihu, or Bohag Bihu, falls in mid-April. It is the most important of the three, marking the Assamese New Year and the start of the sowing season.
  • Bhogali Bihu, or Magh Bihu, falls in January. It is a harvest festival, built around community feasts once the crop is in.
  • Kongali Bihu, or Kati Bihu, falls in October or November. It is a quieter, more solemn observance, marking a lean stretch when granaries run low.
  • The word “Rongali” comes from the Assamese word for joy, colour, and celebration. This is why Rongali Bihu is the loudest and most widely celebrated of the three.

Dance, Music, and Food Good to Know

  • The Bihu dance is Assam’s best-known folk dance. Young men and women perform it together in open fields and village grounds during Rongali Bihu.
  • The dance is driven by the Bihu dhol, a barrel-shaped double-headed drum that carries the beat throughout. The pepa, a curved horn made from buffalo horn, adds its distinctive melody.
  • Other instruments join in too: the taal, a pair of bell-metal cymbals, along with the gagana, toka, and xutuli.
  • Bihu geet, or Bihu songs, accompany the dance. Their lyrics, passed down across generations, focus on love, nature, and everyday rural life.
  • Rongali Bihu traditionally runs across seven days, known locally as Shat Bihu. It opens with Goru Bihu, a day devoted to bathing and honouring cattle.
  • Families mark the festival with pitha (rice cakes), laru (sweets), and bonfires called Meji, lit to symbolically mark the end of winter.

A Shared Assamese Identity Great to Know

  • Bihu’s roots run deeper than any single community. Scholars describe it as blending Tibeto-Burman, Austroasiatic, and Indo-Aryan traditions, entangled so closely that no single origin can be picked out.
  • Nearly every community in Assam has contributed something to Bihu over time. This is part of why it functions as a shared regional identity, not just one group’s festival.
  • On 14 April 2023, Assam set two Guinness World Records at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati: 11,304 Bihu dancers and 2,548 drummers performed together, the largest Bihu dance and largest drum ensemble ever recorded.
  • Kongali Bihu carries a distinctly animistic character. Its rituals focus on protecting standing crops and worshipping plants directly, a older layer beneath the festival’s more visible Rongali celebrations.

Current Affairs

  • Rongali Bihu 2026 ran from 14 to 20 April, opening with Goru Bihu (cattle worship) on 14 April and Manuh Bihu (the main human celebration) on 15 April. (Source: Wonderslate Current Affairs).
  • Streets and villages across Assam marked the 2026 festival with traditional dress, dhoti and gamosa for men and mekhela chador for women, alongside Bihu dance, Bihu Geet, and Meji bonfires. (Source: The Hans India).
