The Paris Agreement is often remembered wrong. Not every UN member signed it on day one. And the climate-finance figure gets inflated tenfold in exam traps.

Adoption, Signing, and Entry Into Force
  • Adopted 196 parties adopted the Paris Agreement at COP21, in Paris, on 12 December 2015.
  • Signed later It opened for signature on 22 April 2016. Not every UN member country signed on the first day.
  • In force It entered into force on 4 November 2016, once enough countries had ratified it.
The Temperature Target
  • Target The Agreement aims to hold the rise in global average temperature well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts toward 1.5°C.

The Real Climate-Finance Number
  • $100 billion, not $1000 billion Developed countries reaffirmed a pledge of $100 billion a year by 2020, continuing through 2025. Not $1000 billion.
  • New goal ahead Before 2025, parties are to set a new collective finance goal, starting from a floor of $100 billion a year.
India’s Role
  • Ratification India ratified the Paris Agreement on 2 October 2016, chosen deliberately to fall on Gandhi Jayanti.

  • Pattern Claims that the Agreement was “signed by all UN members” or that developed countries pledged “$1000 billion” are both false. The real finance figure is ten times smaller.
