Three geographic terms
- Autonomous community: a region exercising self-government within a country.
- Peninsula: land surrounded by water on most sides.
- Regional state: a constituent region within a federal country.
These terms describe different places and political arrangements. None automatically identifies a separate independent country.
Four regions, four country matches
Catalonia — Spain
Catalonia is an autonomous community in northeast Spain. Autonomy concerns self-government within the Spanish constitutional framework.

Crimea — Ukraine
Crimea is a peninsula in Ukraine. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
The UN territorial framework recognizes Crimea as part of Ukraine. The annexation and Russian control do not place Crimea in Hungary.

Mindanao — Philippines
Mindanao is the Philippines’ second-largest island. Mindanao–Philippines is therefore correctly matched.
An island is a geographic landform. Its size does not make it a separate country.

Oromia is a regional state of Ethiopia. It is not in Nigeria.
Oromia is associated with the Oromo, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group. Regional identity and political grievances must be distinguished from the country match.

Catalonia’s independence dispute
Catalonia’s independence movement included a disputed referendum in 2017. The Spanish government opposed the independence referendum on constitutional grounds.
That dispute concerned Catalonia’s relationship with Spain. It did not connect Catalonia with Hungary, Nigeria or the Philippines.

Crimea’s 2014 annexation and international status
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, but the country-matching answer remains Ukraine. The UN General Assembly affirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The 2014 referendum was not accepted as a basis for changing Crimea’s status. Distinguish occupation or territorial control from internationally recognized sovereignty.
These statements explain the historical question’s country match. They do not describe a new change in control.

A territorial-control dispute can be treated as proof that Crimea belongs to Hungary.
Oromia’s land and political grievances
Oromia experienced protests over land concerns and political representation. Protests in 2015–16 broadened into economic, political and cultural grievances.
The political context concerns the Oromo people within Ethiopia. Oromia–Nigeria remains incorrect regardless of those disputes.

Why is “3 and 4 only” wrong when Mindanao fits?
Pair 3 correctly places Mindanao in the Philippines. Pair 4 still incorrectly places Oromia in Nigeria.
The combined option fails because both listed pairs must fit their countries. Keep the correct Mindanao fact while rejecting the incorrect combination.
An answer containing one correct pair and one incorrect pair is fully correct.
Separate autonomy, location and territorial control
Ask what the question is testing
“Where is Catalonia?” asks for Spain. A question about its independence movement asks about a political demand within that setting.
“Where is Oromia?” asks for Ethiopia. A question about Oromo protests asks about land and political grievances.
Crimea requires a further distinction between international status and Russian annexation. Neither issue makes the country “Hungary” correct.
Learn the country match first, then attach the dated news context. This prevents a political headline from replacing the required geographic relationship.
