Must Know · Donbas and Kachin
Where is Donbas?
1.1 Is Donbas in Syria?
No. Donbas is in Ukraine. It is in the east of the country. The UN spells it “Donbass”.
A UN story from 2020 speaks of people in Donbass, Ukraine. Red Cross pages name its two regions, Donetsk and Luhansk.

1.2 What is the region known for?
It is the centre of Ukraine’s coal-mining industry. The UN says it was long seen as the country’s industrial heartland.
War has hurt that economy. People moved away and infrastructure was damaged.
1.3 What has the conflict looked like?
- Mid-April 2014: fighting began in eastern Ukraine, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
- By September 2015: at least 7,962 people had been killed and 17,811 injured, says the UN.
- The contact line: a 420-kilometre barrier that divides government-controlled territory from the rest, in 2020.
- Today: the Red Cross describes an international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine across Donetsk and Luhansk.

Where is Kachin?
2.1 Is Kachin in Ethiopia?
No. Kachin is in Myanmar. UNHCR calls it Myanmar’s northernmost state.
Its capital is Myitkyina.
2.2 Who is fighting there?
The Myanmar military and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) have fought for years.
A 17-year ceasefire between them collapsed in 2011. UNHCR says ethnic armed groups in Myanmar’s borderlands demand regional political autonomy.
2.3 Is it still going on?
OCHA reported in April 2024 that the KIA launched a new offensive on 7 March. More than 18,000 people were displaced in 10 Kachin townships.
Good to Know · Tigray and the exam trap
Where is Tigray?
3.1 Is Tigray in North Yemen?
No. Tigray is in Ethiopia. Crisis Group calls it Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region.
The war there began on 4 November 2020. It also affected the neighbouring Afar and Amhara regions.
3.2 How did the first war end?
- 2 November 2022: the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) signed a deal in Pretoria.
- Who brokered it: the African Union.
- The AU marked it: in 2023 it called the deal a lasting peace through permanent cessation of hostilities.
3.3 What is the latest?
Human Rights Watch, on 9 October 2026, says tensions escalated into open military confrontation on 22 September 2026.
It says fighting resumed on a large scale and spread to the Afar and Amhara regions. This is a fast-moving story, so check the latest news.

Why is None the answer?
4.1 How do the pairs compare?
| Region | Pair given | Real country | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Donbas | Syria | Ukraine | Wrong |
| Kachin | Ethiopia | Myanmar | Wrong |
| Tigray | North Yemen | Ethiopia | Wrong |
Sources: UN, ICRC, UNHCR, OCHA, Crisis Group, Human Rights Watch.
4.2 Why is "None" a valid choice?
Some questions make every pair wrong. If you assume at least one pair must be right, you will guess badly.
Think it through: What should you do first?
Check each pair on its own against the real country. Do not look at the options yet.
4.3 What is the safe rule?
- Donbas: Ukraine.
- Kachin: Myanmar.
- Tigray: Ethiopia.
- Test each pair alone. Then count the matches.

Exam traps and the PYQ
5.1 What did UPSC ask?
UPSC CSP 2023, GS Paper I, Series A, Q97. Consider the following pairs:
Area of conflict mentioned in news — Country where it is located
1. Donbas — Syria
2. Kachin — Ethiopia
3. Tigray — North Yemen
How many of the above pairs are correctly matched?
(a) Only one
(b) Only two
(c) All three
(d) None
UPSC’s official key gives (d) None. The key gives no reasons. The reasons here are ours, from the sources above.
5.2 Why is the answer (d)?
- Pair 1 is wrong: Donbas is in Ukraine, not Syria.
- Pair 2 is wrong: Kachin is in Myanmar, not Ethiopia.
- Pair 3 is wrong: Tigray is in Ethiopia, not North Yemen.
- So: no pair is correct.
5.3 Which mix-ups does this topic invite?
- Which country is Donbas in? Ukraine.
- Which country is Kachin in? Myanmar.
- Which country is Tigray in? Ethiopia.
- Is “None” possible? Yes. Check every pair.
Remember this
- Donbas: Ukraine. Regions: Donetsk and Luhansk. Fighting since April 2014.
- Kachin: Myanmar. Northernmost state. The KIA is the armed group.
- Tigray: Ethiopia. Northern region. War began 4 November 2020.
- Pretoria deal: 2 November 2022, brokered by the African Union.
- PYQ trap: every pair was wrong, so the answer was None.
Explain it back: Say in your own words why “None” was the right choice in the exam question.
