India opened its first embassy in Latin America in Rio de Janeiro in 1948. Nearly eight decades later, Brazil sent its largest-ever delegation to India for a state visit.
This lesson follows that story. It covers how the ties began, what the two countries do together, and what exams ask.

India and Brazil set up diplomatic relations in 1948. India opened its first embassy in Latin America in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1971 India moved the embassy to Brasilia, the new Brazilian capital.
The two countries became Strategic Partners in 2006.

What happened in the recent state visits?
PM Modi made a state visit to Brazil on 7-8 July 2025. It was the first by an Indian PM in 57 years. He came after the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio.
President Lula made a state visit to India on 18-22 February 2026.
He brought 11 ministers and about 300 business leaders. The two sides signed 11 agreements and MoUs.
They covered digital work, rare earths, key minerals and medicines.

How do the two governments talk to each other?
They hold regular meetings at several levels.
Foreign ministers meet in a Joint Commission. Top security aides hold a Strategic Dialogue.
Senior diplomats and trade officials also meet on a set schedule.

What do the two countries do together?
How big is the trade?
Trade grew by over 25% in 2025 and reached $15.21 billion. Indian exports were $8.35 billion. Imports from Brazil were $6.85 billion.
In the first six months of 2026 trade was $8.774 billion. That is 36.95% higher than a year before.
Indian investment in Brazil is over $15 billion.
Brazil sells India crude oil, soybean oil, gold, raw sugar and cotton.

What is the defence link?
A defence agreement was signed in 2003 and ratified in 2006. It created a Joint Defence Committee.
Its 8th meeting was held in Brasilia on 29-30 July 2025.
A 2+2 dialogue of defence and foreign officials began in New Delhi in March 2024.
In December 2025 the two sides signed an MoU on keeping Scorpene submarines in service.

India imports much of its oil. Owning a share in fields abroad gives it a more secure supply. Brazil is the top place in the Americas for such Indian investment.
What is the energy link?
India has put more money into Brazilian oil and gas fields than into any other country in the Americas.
The PSUs OVL and BPRL have invested $3.5 billion there.
Both countries are founding members of the Global Biofuels Alliance.

What is the space link?
India launched Brazil’s Amazonia-1 satellite in 2021.
It was the first Earth observation satellite fully designed, built and run by Brazil.

What is IBSA?
India, Brazil and South Africa launched the IBSA Dialogue Forum in Brasilia on 6 June 2003.
The launch came through the Brasilia Declaration.
It is different from BRICS. IBSA has only these three members.

Where else do they work together?
Both countries take part in BRICS, the G20, the G4 and the International Solar Alliance.
In July 2025 the leaders backed reform of the UN Security Council. They want more seats, both permanent and non-permanent, for developing regions.

How are the two countries linked by culture?
Statues of Mahatma Gandhi stand in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Salvador, Londrina and Cuiaba.
A group called Filhos de Gandhy, or Sons of Gandhi, is popular in Salvador.
The Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre opened in Sao Paulo in May 2011.
Portuguese rule also linked Goa and Brazil for centuries. Cabral reached Brazil in 1500.

What is the cattle story?
Indian breeds such as Gir and Kankrej were exported to Brazil in the early 20th century.
It is a little-known biological link between the two countries.

What was the August 2026 telecom MoU?
On 21 August 2026 India and Brazil signed an MoU on telecommunications and ICT.
They signed it in Pune, on the sidelines of the 12th BRICS Communications Ministers Meeting.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia signed for India. Frederico de Siqueira Filho signed for Brazil.
The MoU aims to deepen work on internet access for all, cybersecurity and digital public systems.

Which mix-ups should you avoid?
The first Indian embassy opened in Rio de Janeiro, not Brasilia.
IBSA is not BRICS. IBSAMAR is an IBSA exercise.
The Strategic Partnership dates from 2006. The state visits came in 2025 and 2026.
