Kanaklata Barua: Birbala
She was 17, unarmed, and carrying a flag. That was enough to get her shot.
Who Kanaklata Barua was
Kanaklata Barua was a young Assamese freedom fighter killed during a Quit India flag march. Police fired at marchers near Gohpur police station on 20 September 1942.
Gohpur lay in the old Darrang district. It is now in Biswanath district, Assam. Kanaklata came from the nearby Barangbari area.
India’s 1942 Quit India Movement called for the end of British rule. Arrests of national leaders pushed many local organisers to act.
Government commemorations often give her birth as 22 December 1924. That date makes her 17 when she died.
Her exact age is not settled by the official pages. Another Ministry of Culture account gives 1926, while an Assam Police history calls her 14.
The shared fact is clear: she was a teenager who led a public flag procession. Avoid treating one reported age as a proved birth record.

Kanaklata joined a Quit India flag procession at Gohpur on 20 September 1942. True or false?
True. Government records place her at the Gohpur police-station march on that date.

What happened at Gohpur?
The procession aimed to raise the national flag at Gohpur police station. Such police stations stood for colonial authority.
Kanaklata walked near the front with other young volunteers. Government records also name Mukunda Kakati among the marchers.
August 1942: Congress launches Quit India. The colonial state arrests top leaders.
20 September: Volunteers approach Gohpur station with a flag. Police stop and warn the procession.
At the station: Marchers keep moving. Police fire. Kanaklata is struck and dies.
Afterward: Mukunda Kakati is also shot. Both are remembered at Gohpur.
Some later accounts describe exactly who lifted the fallen flag. One records Rampati Rajkhowa raising it after the shooting.
Those details come from later commemorative records. They do not justify invented final words or a perfectly timed shot-by-shot scene.

A reliable timestamp proves Kanaklata died before every other Assam Quit India martyr. True or false?
False. Bhogeswari Phukanani died in another Assam clash that day. The “first” label is not a proved time order.
A village youth in a wider uprising
Accounts place Kanaklata’s childhood in Barangbari. They describe hardship and family responsibilities.
Precise claims about when she lost each parent or left school need stronger records. They are not necessary to understand her public action.
In 1942, rural Assam saw meetings, marches, and flag actions. Local organisers carried on after prominent Congress leaders were jailed.
Women and teenagers took visible roles. Kanaklata’s march shows that Quit India was not only a movement of big cities.
Assam Police records place the Gohpur firing alongside deadly police action at Dhekiajuli. Both events belong to this wider regional story.

Every official source gives Kanaklata the same birth year and age. True or false?
False. Government commemorations differ. They agree that she was a teenager.
Mrityu Bahini and the flag volunteers
Mrityu Bahini means “death brigade.” The name expressed a willingness to face extreme danger for the independence cause.
Government accounts connect Kanaklata with this local youth group. They place girls and young women at the front of the Gohpur march.
The official remembrance says Kanaklata led other girls toward the station. It does not prove that she commanded every volunteer in Assam.
Marching with a flag was a political act. It challenged colonial power in a place where police could arrest or shoot.
Mukunda Kakati also died after the firing. Accounts differ on the exact path of the bullet and the time of his death.
What matters is their shared part in the same procession. Keep both names with the Gohpur event.

Mrityu Bahini was a youth group linked to the Gohpur march. True or false?
True. Official remembrances connect Kanaklata with the group and the flag volunteers.
How Assam remembers Gohpur
Public memory has kept Kanaklata’s name visible. Memorials at Gohpur honour the flag march and the people killed there.
Official records do not all tell the event in the same way. Some give different ages or dates.
That is a reason to check evidence, not a reason to erase her role. The firing and her death are firmly recorded.
The Indian Coast Guard commissioned a ship named Kanaklata Barua in September 2020. Its release says it replaced an earlier vessel with the same name.
Her name also appears in Assam’s university law. These honours show how later generations chose to remember her.

A Coast Guard ship commissioned in 2020 was named for Kanaklata Barua. True or false?
True. The Coast Guard release says it replaced an earlier ship with the same name.
Was she Assam’s “first martyr”?
“First martyr” is a memorial label, not a settled timeline finding. Many remembrances call Kanaklata a leading Quit India martyr.
Bhogeswari Phukanani died in a separate Assam flag clash on 20 September 1942, according to a government memorial.
Official accounts do not provide a reliable minute-by-minute comparison. Avoid saying Kanaklata definitely died before every other Assamese protester.
She was also not India’s youngest freedom martyr. This site’s Baji Rout lesson describes an earlier child martyr.
The stronger lesson is about participation. Teenagers, women, and villagers all carried the independence struggle.

Kanaklata’s march shows rural Assam took part in Quit India. True or false?
True. Villagers and youth joined processions beyond India’s major cities.
A university bearing her name
Assam passed the Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University Act in 2024. The name links a new institution to her memory.
A government release recorded a foundation-stone event at Gohpur in 2025. A foundation ceremony is not proof that all courses are already operating.
The university belongs to Kanaklata’s later public legacy. It should not crowd out the 1942 history.

Exam Angle: dates, place, and evidence
Remember Gohpur, Assam, 20 September 1942, and the Quit India Movement. Link Kanaklata with the flag procession and Mukunda Kakati.
Do not move the event to Bengal. Matangini Hazra led a separate 1942 flag march there.
Do not confuse “teenage martyr” with “India’s youngest martyr.” The titles answer different questions.
For a precise-age question, check the source used. Government pages differ between 1924 and 1926 birth years.
For an explanation, tell the simple sequence: local mobilisation, march, police warning, firing, and lasting memory.
Do not repeat reported last words as a verified transcript. The surviving accounts are later retellings.

Kanaklata’s reported last words are a verified police transcript. True or false?
False. Later narratives report words and flag details, but they are not a verified contemporaneous transcript.
