A system that overrides the driver isn’t usually good news. On Indian Railways, it’s the opposite — Kavach exists to apply the brakes when a Loco Pilot can’t.
1. Trials to National Rollout
- Feb 2016 The first field trials of Kavach on passenger trains begin.
- 2018-19 Three firms are approved to supply Kavach Version 3.2, after an Independent Safety Assessment.
- Jul 2020 Kavach is adopted as India’s National Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system.
2. Version 4.0 and Deployment
- 16 Jul 2024 RDSO approves Kavach version 4.0, with major feature improvements for large-scale deployment.
- 31 Jul 2026 Kavach 4.0 is commissioned on 2,633 route-km, covering the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes.
1. What Kavach Is
- Indigenous Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system for Indian Railways. It requires the highest order of safety certification, SIL-4.
- Function Kavach automatically applies the brakes if a Loco Pilot fails to maintain speed limits. It also helps trains run safely in bad weather.
- Adoption Kavach was adopted as India’s National ATP system in July 2020.
2. How Kavach Is Built
- Components Implementing Kavach needs several parts. These are Station Kavach at every station and block section, RFID tags along the track, telecom towers, optical fibre cable, and Loco Kavach on every locomotive.
- Coverage As of 31 July 2026, Kavach 4.0 is commissioned on 2,633 route-km. This covers 1,423 route-km on the Delhi-Mumbai route, and 1,210 route-km on the Delhi-Howrah route.
1. Version 4.0 Upgrades
- Ver 4.0 Kavach version 4.0, approved by RDSO on 16 July 2024, improves location accuracy. It also gives better signal-aspect information in large yards. It adds a station-to-station Kavach interface over optical fibre. It also links directly with the existing Electronic Interlocking system.
- Rollout Trackside Kavach work is underway on 21,794 route-km. This covers the Golden Quadrilateral, Golden Diagonal, High Density Network, and other identified routes.
2. Progress in Numbers
- Infrastructure Progress so far includes 11,547 km of optical fibre cable laid, 1,721 telecom towers installed, and 1,009 station data centres built. It also includes 7,726 route-km of trackside equipment installed.
- Fleet Kavach is fitted in 6,290 locomotives. Work is underway on 7,190 more locomotives and 1,200 EMU/MEMU rakes.
- Speed trial Kavach trials at 160 km/h succeeded on the Chipyana Buzurg-Tundla section of the Delhi-Howrah route, using a Vande Bharat trainset.
- Spending ₹3,875 crore was spent on Kavach works up to June 2026. A further ₹2,066 crore is allocated for 2026-27.
1. Northern Railway Expansion
- Approval10 Jul 2026 Indian Railways approved Rs 206 crore for Kavach deployment, on 680 route km of Northern Railway. This covers the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections. The upgrade uses Kavach Version 4.0. (Source: PIB)

1. Kavach in the Bigger Safety Picture
- Spending trend Kavach sits inside a much larger safety-spending trend. Railways’ safety-related expenditure has grown from ₹39,200 crore in 2013-14 to ₹1,20,389 crore in 2026-27. It has risen in nearly every year in between.
- Philosophy Kavach’s “fail-safe by design” approach reflects a real shift in railway safety philosophy. Instead of just alerting a Loco Pilot who misses a speed limit, the system takes over and applies the brakes itself.
