Key World Resources, at a glance
A handful of countries quietly supply the raw materials behind everyday technology
Botswana
World’s largest diamond producer by value.
Chile
Largest known lithium reserves, extracted as brine.
Indonesia
World’s largest nickel producer.
DR Congo
About three-fourths of the world’s cobalt.
Which Countries Lead in Diamonds, Lithium, and Nickel?
The 2025 PYQ trio: Botswana, Chile, and Indonesia
- Botswana is the world’s largest diamond producer by value. Debswana, a 50-50 partnership between the government and De Beers, runs the country’s major mines, including Orapa and Jwaneng.
- Chile holds the world’s largest known lithium reserves. Most is extracted as brine from the Salar de Atacama, a salt flat in the Atacama Desert.
- Indonesia is the world’s largest nickel producer. Its vast laterite ore deposits feed the global battery and stainless-steel supply chains.
- All three pairs were tested together in a 2025 UPSC question, a straightforward “match the country to its resource” format.
Q1. True or False: Botswana is the world’s largest diamond producer by value.
Q2. True or False: Indonesia leads the world in lithium reserves, not nickel production.
Where Does the World’s Lithium Really Come From?
Beyond Chile: reserves, production, and refining are three different races
- Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia together form the “Lithium Triangle,” holding the majority of the world’s known lithium reserves, all extracted from salt-flat brine in the Andes.
- Australia is the world’s largest lithium producer by volume, mined from hard-rock spodumene deposits rather than brine.
- China holds a smaller share of raw lithium reserves but dominates global lithium refining and battery-grade processing, much like it does for cobalt and nickel, covered in World Cobalt Production.
- Lithium demand has surged with electric vehicles and grid-scale batteries, making these reserve and production figures increasingly significant geopolitically.
Q3. True or False: The “Lithium Triangle” comprises Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Q4. True or False: Chile is the world’s largest lithium producer by volume.
Think it through, before reading on. Chile holds the largest known lithium reserves, yet Australia produces more lithium by volume each year. How can a country with smaller reserves out-produce the country with the biggest ones?
Show the explanation
Reserves measure what is still in the ground; production measures what is actually being mined right now. Chile’s lithium sits in brine, which is slower and more water-intensive to process into battery-grade material. Australia’s lithium sits in hard-rock spodumene deposits, which can be mined and shipped faster with existing industrial mining methods. So a country can sit on the world’s largest reserve and still be out-produced, year to year, by a country with a faster extraction method and smaller total reserves.
Remember the trap. “Largest reserves” and “largest producer” are not the same country. Chile leads lithium reserves; Australia leads lithium production.
What Other Resources Define Global Supply Chains?
A quick world map of resources worth remembering
- The Democratic Republic of the Congo supplies about three-fourths of the world’s cobalt, a key material in lithium-ion batteries, a share examined more closely in World Cobalt Production.
- China accounts for over 80% of India’s lithium imports and dominates global processing of both cobalt and nickel, on top of refining most of the world’s raw lithium.
- Oil wealth does not automatically mean a stable economy: Venezuela holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, yet much of it is far harder to extract than Saudi Arabia’s, a contrast explored in Venezuela: Oil Reserves and Economic Crisis.
- Together, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Canada control over half of the world’s proven oil reserves, showing how concentrated energy wealth remains, part of the broader pattern covered in Natural Resources: Distribution and Distributive Justice.

Previous Year Question
How has UPSC tested country-resource pairs before?
- UPSC CSP 2025, GS Paper I — “Consider the following pairs: Country — Resource-rich in. I. Botswana — Diamond. II. Chile — Lithium. III. Indonesia — Nickel. In how many of the above rows is the given information correctly matched?” (Correct answer: all three.)
