Why the DRC Dominates Cobalt

~74% of World Output The Democratic Republic of the Congo produces roughly three-quarters of the world’s mined cobalt, by far the largest share held by any single country.
The Copperbelt The DRC’s cobalt sits in the same ore bodies as its copper, in the mineral-rich Copperbelt region — cobalt is mostly recovered as a byproduct of copper (and, elsewhere, nickel) mining, not mined on its own.
What It’s Used For Cobalt is a key ingredient in the cathodes of lithium-ion batteries, making it essential to electric vehicles, laptops, phones, and grid-scale energy storage.
Two Other Major Producers Well behind the DRC, Indonesia and Russia are the next-largest cobalt producers, though neither comes close to the DRC’s share.

Artisanal Mining A meaningful share of DRC cobalt comes from “artisanal” mining — informal, hand-dug sites, often lacking safety equipment, and linked to serious concerns over child labour and unsafe working conditions.
China’s Refining Role While the DRC mines the raw ore, most of the world’s cobalt is refined into battery-grade material in China, which dominates the processing stage of the supply chain even though it mines little cobalt itself.
Responsible Sourcing Concerns over artisanal-mining conditions have pushed battery makers and automakers toward “responsible sourcing” certification schemes, and research into battery chemistries that use less or no cobalt.

Nickel — Indonesia Indonesia has rapidly become the world’s largest nickel producer, driven by its vast laterite ore deposits and heavy state and Chinese investment in processing capacity.
Lithium — Australia and Chile Australia is the single largest country producer of lithium by volume, mined from hard-rock deposits; Chile ranks second, extracting lithium as brine from Andean salt flats.
Copper — Chile Chile is the world’s top copper producer, supplying roughly a quarter of global output — copper being the metal cobalt is most often mined alongside.
