Gopi Chand Bhargava: Punjab’s First Chief Minister

  • Gopi Chand Bhargava (8 March 1889 – 26 December 1966) was born in Sirsa, in present-day Haryana. He completed his M.B.B.S. at Medical College, Lahore, in 1912.
  • He gave up his medical practice to join the Non-Cooperation Movement, drawn in by Lala Lajpat Rai. He helped lead the agitation against the Simon Commission.
  • On 30 October 1928, he protested the Simon Commission in Lahore. He was injured shielding Lajpat Rai from a police lathi charge.
  • He was arrested multiple times over the following two decades. This included the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930 and 1933. During Quit India in 1942, he served his longest term: two and a half years in prison.
  • On 15 August 1947, the day India became independent, he became the first Chief Minister of Punjab.
  • He served until 13 April 1949, then returned for a second term from 18 October 1949 to 20 June 1951. He briefly served a third time, as acting Chief Minister, for a few weeks in June-July 1964.
