  • Motilal Nehru was born on 6 May 1861 in Agra.
  • His father, Gangadhar Nehru, had already died. Motilal was born after him.
  • He passed his bar examination in 1883, and practised law in Kanpur, then Allahabad.
  • By 1909, he had earned the right to argue cases before the Privy Council in London.
  • In 1900, he bought a large house in Allahabad, and renamed it Anand Bhawan.
  • His son, Jawaharlal Nehru, became independent India’s first Prime Minister.

  • In 1922, a mob killed policemen at Chauri Chaura. Gandhi suspended the Non-Cooperation Movement in response.
  • Motilal Nehru publicly disagreed with that decision.
  • Along with C.R. Das, he founded the Swaraj Party on 1 January 1923.
  • The party’s strategy was different: enter British-run legislative councils, and obstruct government business from inside.
  • Later in 1923, he was elected to the Central Legislative Assembly, and became its Leader of Opposition.

The Nehru Report, and a Father’s Son Great to Know
