Before Gandhi, before mass movements, a handful of Indian thinkers built a different kind of case against British rule: an economic one, backed by numbers. Three of them did this work independently, in different cities, years apart.

Three Independent Economic Critiques
- All three, genuine critics Dadabhai Naoroji, G. Subramania Iyer, and R.C. Dutt were all real, substantial economic critics of British colonial rule in India.
- Naoroji's Drain theory Naoroji argued British policy drained India's wealth to Britain. Unequal trade and high home charges were the mechanism, set out fully in "Poverty and Un-British Rule in India."
- Iyer's critique G. Subramania Iyer wrote "Some Economic Aspects of British Rule in India" (1903), arguing British policy, not India's pre-colonial past, caused its economic stagnation.
- Dutt's histories R.C. Dutt wrote "The Economic History of India Under Early British Rule" and its Victorian-Age sequel, critically analysing land revenue and famine policy.

- A journalist too Iyer was also a lawyer and journalist. He founded both The Hindu newspaper and the Tamil-language Swadesamitran.
- An insider's critique Dutt had served inside the Indian Civil Service himself. He later turned that administrative experience into a critical, evidence-based history of British economic policy.

Numbers as a Political Weapon
- Before Hobson and Lenin These Indian economic critiques of colonialism predate the more famous Western theories of imperialism, by Hobson and Lenin, by decades.
- Grounding early nationalism Their work gave the early Indian National Congress a genuine economic foundation, alongside its political demands, well before Gandhi's mass movements began.
- Numbers, not just grievance All three built their case on real trade, revenue, and famine data, not just moral appeals. This was a deliberate strategy, meant to counter British claims that colonial rule benefited India economically.
