- The NCC traces its roots to the University Corps, set up under the Indian Defence Act, in 1917.
- The University Corps was replaced by the University Training Corps, in 1920, under the Indian Territorial Act.
- The NCC itself came into existence on 15 July 1948, under the National Cadet Corps Act.
- A Girls Division was added in 1949, giving school and college-going girls equal opportunities to join.
- An Air Wing was added in 1950, and a Naval Wing in 1952. This made the NCC a tri-services organisation.

- The NCC also runs Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat Camps. These bring cadets from different states together, to build national integration.
- An NCC Alumni Association has also been established, for former cadets.

- 28 July 2026: The Government is expanding NCC coverage in Scheduled Caste (SC)-concentrated areas, and areas under the Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM-AJAY).

- 263 Government schools have been identified under the initiative. Of these, 25 schools already have NCC units, and 8 are on the waiting list. The remaining 230 have not yet applied to set up an NCC unit.
- The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment shared the list of these 230 eligible schools with authorities across seven States and one Union Territory. No school from Maharashtra features on the identified list.
