Great to Know

  • Swaminathan’s real contribution wasn’t inventing high-yield wheat himself. Borlaug’s team had already bred it, in Mexico. His contribution was adaptation: testing and modifying it for Indian conditions, and building the system to deliver it to farmers at scale.
  • The Green Revolution solved India’s immediate food-security crisis. It also drew later criticism, over groundwater depletion, soil degradation, and regional inequality between states that adopted it early and those that didn’t.
  • His later work, especially the National Commission on Farmers, shifted focus from production quantity to the economic security of the farmers producing it. He explicitly linked this shift to the Green Revolution’s unfinished business.
  • Swaminathan supplied the science, but a minister had to back it against real institutional resistance. Union Agriculture Minister C. Subramaniam authorised the risky Mexican seed import, over the Planning Commission’s own objections.
