  • Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (15 September 1860 – 14 April 1962) was a civil engineer and statesman. He was born in Muddenahalli, in the Kolar district of the princely state of Mysore, now Karnataka.
  • He earned an engineering diploma from the College of Science in Pune. In 1885, he joined the Bombay Public Works Department as an Assistant Engineer.
  • In 1903, Visvesvaraya patented an automatic sluice-gate system. It was first installed at the Khadakwasla Reservoir near Pune, to stop the reservoir from overflowing.
  • In November 1909, he became Chief Engineer of Mysore State. In this role, he designed the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam on the Kaveri river, one of Asia’s largest reservoirs at the time.
  • He served as the 19th Diwan (chief minister) of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. As Diwan, he founded the University of Mysore in 1916, along with the State Bank of Mysore and the Mysore Iron and Steel Works.
  • The British Crown knighted him in 1915, making him a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE). India awarded him the Bharat Ratna, its highest civilian honour, in 1955.

  • Visvesvaraya’s sluice-gate patent introduced a “block system” of water distribution. It let dam operators release water fairly among farmers downstream, instead of an uncontrolled overflow.
  • As Diwan, he also founded the Mysore Chamber of Commerce and the Mysore Economic Conference. Both aimed to plan the state’s industrial and economic growth systematically.
  • He lived to be 101 years old, working as a consulting engineer well into his nineties. He died on 14 April 1962.
  • The Government of India declared 15 September, his birthday, as National Engineers’ Day in 1968. It honours his lifelong contribution to Indian engineering.
