What is the SSC CGL exam pattern?
The exam has two computer-based tiers. There is no interview.
Tier 1
100 questions in 60 minutes. Four sections of 25 questions. Each section has its own 15-minute limit.
200 marks · qualifying onlyTier 2, Paper I
For all posts. Sections 1 and 2 decide your rank. Section 3 only needs a pass.
390 marks count for rankTier 2, extra papers
Some posts add one more paper. Paper II (statistics) is for statistical posts.
Only for some posts- Tier 1 marks do not count in the final rank. Tier 1 only decides who sits Tier 2.
- Tier 1: each question carries 2 marks. A wrong answer costs 0.5 marks.
- Tier 2 Paper I: each question carries 3 marks. A wrong answer costs 1 mark.
- You need a bachelor’s degree in any subject. Some posts ask for extra subjects.
- The minimum age is 18. The maximum is 27 to 32, depending on the post. Reserved categories get extra years.

200 marks2 marks per question. A wrong answer costs 0.5 marks.
- General intelligence and reasoning: 25 questions.
- General awareness: 25 questions.
- Quantitative aptitude: 25 questions.
- English comprehension: 25 questions.
What is in the Tier 2 syllabus?
Paper I is common to all posts. It is harder than Tier 1 and decides your rank.
Tier 2, Paper I
3 marks a questionA wrong answer costs 1 mark in Sections 1 and 2.
- Section 1, Module 1: mathematical abilities, 30 questions.
- Section 1, Module 2: reasoning and general intelligence, 30 questions.
- Section 2, Module 1: English language and comprehension, 45 questions.
- Section 2, Module 2: general awareness, 25 questions.
- Section 3: computer knowledge test and data entry speed test. Both are qualifying.

General awareness appears in both tiers. These are the topics that come up most.

How should you prepare?

1. Practise for speed
Each Tier 1 section has only 15 minutes. Time yourself on every practice set.
2. Solve real papers
Start with the 2024 papers at the top of this page. Note which topics repeat.
3. Build static GK
History, polity and science questions repeat a lot. Use the general awareness links above.
4. Avoid wild guesses
Wrong answers cost marks in both tiers. Skip a question when you have no clue.
