What is the NDA exam pattern?
UPSC holds NDA twice a year. There is a written exam, then an SSB interview.
Mathematics
120 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. Class 11 and 12 level maths.
300 marksGeneral Ability Test
150 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. Part A is English. Part B is general knowledge.
600 marksSSB interview
A five-day test of personality and officer qualities.
900 marks- The written exam is 900 marks. The SSB is also 900 marks. Your final rank uses both.
- All questions are objective. A wrong answer costs one-third of that question’s marks.
- You must have passed Class 12, or be in Class 12 now.
- The Army wing accepts any stream. The Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy need physics, chemistry and maths in Class 12.
- The age limit is about 16.5 to 19.5 years. Only unmarried men and women can apply.

Mathematics
300 marks · 120 questionsClass 11 and 12 level. The maths papers above are the best practice.
- Algebra, matrices and determinants.
- Trigonometry and analytical geometry.
- Differential and integral calculus, and vectors.
- Statistics and probability.
General Ability Test
600 marks · 150 questionsPart A: English, 200 marks. Part B: general knowledge, 400 marks.
- English: grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.
- Physics, chemistry and general science.
- Indian history, the freedom struggle and culture.
- Indian and world geography.
- Current events and general knowledge.
How should you prepare?
Four simple habits for NDA.
1. Make maths your strength
Maths is 300 marks. Practise Class 11 and 12 topics every day.
2. Solve real papers
Start with the papers at the top of this page. Time yourself for 2 hours 30 minutes.
3. Do not skip GK science
Physics and chemistry carry many GAT marks. Revise your school science books.
4. Prepare for the SSB
The SSB is 900 marks, as much as the written exam. Work on fitness and confidence early.
