Drainage System of India: Himalayan vs Peninsular Rivers

India’s rivers split into two families that barely resemble each other — one young and snow-fed, one ancient and rain-only. Knowing which river belongs to which family answers most exam questions on its own.

Drainage Basics, and Which Sea Each River Feeds
  • Drainage Basin A drainage basin is the whole area a river and its tributaries drain. The boundary between two basins is called a watershed.
  • Basin vs Watershed “Basin” and “watershed” describe the same idea at different scales. Basins refer to large rivers; watersheds usually refer to small rivulets.
  • Bay of Bengal Side About 77% of India’s drainage area empties into the Bay of Bengal, carried by the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri.
  • Arabian Sea Side The remaining 23% empties into the Arabian Sea, carried by the Indus, Narmada, Tapi, Mahi, and Periyar.
  • The Water Divide The Delhi Ridge, the Aravallis, and the Sahyadris (Western Ghats) together form the line separating these two drainage halves.
Himalayan vs Peninsular: The Real Divide
  • Himalayan Rivers The Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra systems are young, fed by both snowmelt and rain, so they stay perennial (flowing) all year.
  • Peninsular Rivers The Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, and Mahanadi are much older, fed only by rainfall, so they run seasonal and non-perennial.
  • Course Behaviour Himalayan rivers cut deep gorges in the mountains, then meander and shift course freely across the plains. Peninsular rivers keep a fixed course in shallow, well-graded valleys, with no meandering.
  • The Exceptions The Narmada and Tapi are Peninsular rivers, but they flow west into the Arabian Sea through a rift valley, not east like the rest.

The Himalayan Systems: Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra
  • Indus The Indus rises near Mount Kailash in Tibet and is the westernmost Himalayan river, flowing through Ladakh before entering Pakistan.
  • Ganga The Ganga rises as the Bhagirathi at Gangotri. It becomes the Ganga at Devprayag after meeting the Alaknanda, and is India’s largest river system by basin area.
  • Brahmaputra The Brahmaputra rises in Tibet as the Tsangpo, becomes the Siang or Dihang entering Arunachal Pradesh, and is one of the world’s largest rivers.
  • Antecedent Rivers The Satluj, Kosi, and Subansiri are called antecedent rivers. They existed before the Himalayas rose, and simply cut deep gorges as the mountains grew beneath them.
The Peninsular Systems: Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Mahanadi
  • Godavari At 1,465km, the Godavari is the largest Peninsular river system, rising in Nashik and earning the nickname “Dakshin Ganga.”
  • Krishna The Krishna is the second-largest Peninsular river, at 1,401km, rising near Mahabaleshwar in the Sahyadris.
  • Kaveri The Kaveri, at 800km, is unusual among Peninsular rivers. It carries water year-round with little fluctuation, since its upper and lower catchments receive rain from two different monsoons.
  • Mahanadi The Mahanadi runs 851km from Chhattisgarh through Odisha, split roughly evenly between the two states by drainage area.
River Basins by Size: Major, Medium, Minor
  • Major Basins A major river basin has a catchment area over 20,000 sq km. India has 14 of these, including the Ganga, Brahmaputra, Krishna, Narmada, and Tapi.
  • Medium Basins A medium basin runs 2,000-20,000 sq km. India has 44 of these, including the Periyar in Kerala.
  • Minor Basins Basins under 2,000 sq km make up the rest. Most sit in India’s drier, low-rainfall regions.
  • Rajasthan’s Own System The Luni is the largest river system of Rajasthan, rising near Pushkar and running west. It never reaches the sea, disappearing instead into the marshes of the Rann of Kutch.

Where One Ancient River Split Into Three
  • The Indo-Brahma Theory Geologists believe a single mighty river, called the Shiwalik or Indo-Brahma, once ran the entire length of the Himalaya, from Assam to Punjab and beyond.
  • Why It Broke Apart Uplift of the Potwar Plateau split it into the Indus system in the west and the Ganga system in the centre. Subsidence of the Malda Gap later diverted the Brahmaputra toward the Bay of Bengal too.
  • Patterns, Beyond the Basics Most drainage patterns (dendritic, radial, trellis) are covered in WorldGeo0009. One more exists in India: centripetal, where rivers converge from all sides into one depression, as in Rajasthan’s inland salt lakes.
How the Peninsular Drainage Took Its Present Shape
  • Event One The Peninsula’s western edge sank below the sea in the early Tertiary period. This broke the original symmetry of rivers on either side of the old watershed.
  • Event Two As the Himalayas rose, the Peninsula’s own northern edge sagged and cracked into trough faults. The Narmada and Tapi now flow through exactly these troughs.
  • Why That Matters Because they fill old fault cracks rather than build fresh floodplains, the Narmada and Tapi have almost no alluvial or deltaic deposits, unlike most other major rivers.
  • Event Three A slight northwest-to-southeast tilt of the whole Peninsular block gave the rest of the drainage system its lasting orientation toward the Bay of Bengal.
Rivers With a Reputation
  • Sorrow of Bihar The Kosi is nicknamed the “Sorrow of Bihar.” It carries huge sediment loads from the Himalayas and repeatedly changes its own course, burying the land it just flooded.
  • Sorrow of Bengal The Damodar earned the same nickname for its own frequent floods. The Damodar Valley Corporation, formed in 1948 on the model of America’s Tennessee Valley Authority, later built four flood-control dams there.
  • Narmada’s Origin The Narmada and Tapi both rise near the Amarkantak-Satpura region and run through a rift valley. That is exactly why they break the west-to-east rule most Peninsular rivers follow.
