In 2008, a landmark India-US nuclear deal nearly collapsed at the last minute. A scientist handed the Prime Minister a two-sentence note, scribbled on tissue paper, that broke the deadlock. That scientist had already spent four decades building India’s nuclear programme from the ground up.

- Anil Kakodkar was born on 11 November 1943, in Barwani, in present-day Madhya Pradesh. Both his parents were Gandhian freedom fighters.
- He earned a mechanical engineering degree from VJTI, Mumbai, in 1963. He later earned a master’s degree in experimental stress analysis from the University of Nottingham, in 1969.
- Kakodkar joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1964. He played a key role in designing and building the Dhruva reactor, India’s largest indigenous research reactor, which first went critical on 8 August 1985.
- He was part of the core scientific team for India’s nuclear tests in both 1974 and May 1998 (Pokhran-II).
- Kakodkar served as Director of BARC from 1996 to 2000. He then served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, from 2000 to 2009.
- He received the Padma Shri in 1998, the Padma Bhushan in 1999, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2009.
