- Homi Jehangir Bhabha was born on 30 October 1909 in Bombay, into a wealthy Parsi family.
- He studied at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, from 1927. He initially trained in mechanical engineering, but switched to theoretical physics, mentored by Paul Dirac and Ralph Fowler.
- Bhabha proposed the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) to the Tata Trust in March 1944. TIFR was established on 19 December 1945 in Mumbai, with Bhabha as its first Director.
- He founded the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) in January 1954. It was renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1967, in his memory, after his death.
- Bhabha was the first Chairman of India’s Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and is widely called the “father of the Indian nuclear programme.”

- In 1936, Bhabha developed “Bhabha scattering”, a quantum theory of how electrons and their antiparticles, positrons, scatter off each other. It is still used today in particle accelerators, to measure luminosity and test quantum electrodynamics.
- In 1937, working with German physicist Walter Heitler, Bhabha developed the Bhabha-Heitler cascade theory. It explains how a single high-energy cosmic ray striking the upper atmosphere triggers a chain-reaction shower of secondary particles.
- Bhabha devised India’s three-stage nuclear power programme. Stage one uses natural-uranium pressurised heavy-water reactors. Stage two deploys plutonium-fuelled fast breeder reactors. Stage three runs on thorium and uranium-233.
- The programme was designed specifically around India’s resources: scarce uranium, but among the world’s largest thorium reserves, found in the monazite sands of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
- Bhabha died on 24 January 1966, aged 56, when Air India Flight 101 crashed into Mont Blanc in the Alps. The official explanation cited miscommunication between the aircraft and Geneva air traffic control.

- Bhabha died just months after publicly stating India could build an atomic bomb within 18 months. That timing has fuelled decades of unproven speculation about the crash. No credible investigation has substantiated any alternative to the official explanation.
