The pattern: White Rabbit was never built with national timekeeping in mind. Its real appeal for India is what it doesn’t need: no satellite signal that a foreign power could degrade, jam, or spoof.

- White Rabbit combines the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) with Synchronous Ethernet (Sync-E). It then corrects any remaining phase difference between clocks, using a technique called digital dual mixer time difference.
- It is released under the CERN Open Hardware Licence. In 2020, it became part of the IEEE’s global Precision Time Protocol standard, extending its use well beyond particle physics.
- Outside physics, White Rabbit is now used in telecommunications, financial markets, smart power grids, and space applications.
- NPL generates IST using a bank of Cesium atomic clocks and Hydrogen masers. This time is accurate to within about one second in three lakh years, and traceable to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) within 3 nanoseconds.
- CSIR-NPL is setting up five IST-traceable secondary timing centres at RRSLs across India. These are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Faridabad.
- ISRO’s own satellite navigation system, NavIC, is separately being given IST traceability with nanosecond accuracy. This reduces its own reliance on foreign GPS timing.
- High-frequency financial markets, stock exchanges, and digital banking payments were specifically named as sectors expected to benefit from more precise, secure domestic timing.
