Sam Pitroda gave up his American citizenship to build phone exchanges in India. Within a few years, the yellow STD/PCO booth he helped create was a fixture in nearly every Indian town.

- Sam Pitroda (Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda) was born on 16 November 1942, in Titlagarh, in present-day Odisha.
- He earned a master’s degree in physics and electronics from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara. He later earned a master’s in electrical engineering, from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.
- In the United States, he worked at GTE and then at Wescom Switching. There, he helped develop an early digital telephone switch, released in 1978.
- In 1984, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi invited him back to India. He gave up his US citizenship to found the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).
- C-DOT built India’s own digital telephone exchange technology, designed to work reliably in India’s heat, dust, and power conditions, unlike imported Western systems.
- Pitroda is widely credited as the driving force behind India’s telecom revolution, especially the spread of yellow-signed STD/PCO booths, which brought affordable phone access to ordinary Indians.

- He later served as an advisor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In that role, he headed six national Technology Missions: telecommunications, drinking water, literacy, immunisation, dairy development, and oilseeds.
- From 2005 to 2009, Pitroda chaired the National Knowledge Commission, a high-level advisory body to the Prime Minister on education and knowledge infrastructure.
- In the United States, he held around 50 to 100 technology patents. One of the earliest, filed in 1975, was for an electronic diary, an early forerunner of today’s handheld digital devices.
- Before joining C-DOT, he had already built a career as a telecom entrepreneur in the US, including founding his own switching company.
