- Ashoke Sen was born on 15 July 1956, in Kolkata. He is an Indian theoretical physicist, known for his work on string theory.
- He earned a BSc from Presidency College, Kolkata, in 1975, and an MSc from IIT Kanpur in 1976. He then completed a PhD at Stony Brook University, in the United States.
- In 1988, he joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, as a faculty member.
- In 1997, he moved to the Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HCRI), in Prayagraj (then Allahabad), where he became a Distinguished Professor.
- In 2012, Sen was among the first recipients of the Fundamental Physics Prize. This honoured his work showing that all versions of string theory are different limits of one underlying theory.

- His landmark 1994 paper on “strong-weak coupling duality,” now called S-duality, changed the direction of string theory research. It showed that a string theory at strong coupling is equivalent to a different string theory at weak coupling.
- He also proposed an influential idea about “unstable D-branes,” objects in string theory that can decay. This became known as the Sen conjecture on open string tachyon condensation.
- He later developed the “entropy function formalism.” This helps physicists connect the mathematics of black holes to a microscopic count of their internal states, as predicted by string theory.
- In 1998, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, nominated by the physicist Stephen Hawking.
- He has held visiting and honorary positions at MIT, the Korea Institute for Advanced Study, and India’s International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru.

- He also won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1994, India’s top science award for younger scientists, and the Infosys Prize in 2009.
- In 2014, he received the Dirac Medal, from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), one of theoretical physics’s most prestigious honours.
- The Fundamental Physics Prize was created by the Milner Foundation, and later renamed the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. It remains one of the world’s most valuable academic prizes, worth several million dollars.
