- 21 February 1894: Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar is born in Shahpur, in present-day Pakistan.
- 1921: He earns a Doctor of Science in Chemistry, from the University of London.
- 1924–1940: He serves as Director of the University Chemical Laboratories, University of Punjab.
- 1941: He is knighted, for his applied-chemistry work supporting the Second World War effort.
- 26 September 1942: He becomes the first Director of the newly-founded Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
- 1954: He receives the Padma Vibhushan.
- 1 January 1955: He dies of a heart attack, aged 60.

- In 1943, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS).
- Independent India honoured him with the Padma Vibhushan, in 1954.
